Planche Lean - Planche Assistance Exercise

👉PLANCHE LEAN
Planche assistance exercise

The Planche lean is great for introducing beginners to the planche and also great for experienced practitioners as their assistance work.
The forward lean should always be the #1 focus, followed by increasing hold time.
We usually program this isometric hold for anywhere between 10-60secs.

As you get stronger you can start to elevate the feet eventually having them inline with your torso. This will mimic the Planche position even more!

Paralletes are optional however, we commonly find people are stronger with them due to having a fixed implement to grip onto. With that said, incorporating both the floor and paralletes during different training phases is recommended.

👉HANDSTAND PUSH UP (HSPU)

Here are just 5 exercises we recommend to help improve your HSPU strength.

Assuming you already have a solid freestanding handstand, these exercises are great to incorporate in preparation for progressing on to the HSPU.
For those already training the HSPU, these exercises might just be what's missing from your workouts to help unlock the ultimate inverted push up!

PLANCHE ASSISTANCE
👉Dumbbell Planche Press
Lying, from bench, full ROM

This variation is lying, from a bench with full range of motion (ROM).

This time you'll lower as far as you can, lifting to around a 45° angle.

We again recommend focusing on improving your 6-8RM for this exercise to see benefits to your Planche progression.

Lying, from floor, half ROM

Focusing too much on just a specific goal can sometimes lead to plateau's or even injuries. This is when you need to look at what assistance exercises can help support the main movement.

The Dumbbell Planche Press is a great assistance exercise when training for the Planche.
This particular variation is lying, from the floor with a half range of motion (ROM).
We often program this variation with concentric first and pauses at the bottom as this is commonly the weakest range of the movement. This will also force you to overcome inertia on each rep.

We would recommend focusing on improving your 6-8RM for this exercise to see benefits to your Planche progression.

The box maltese press has various uses. Our top 3 are:

✔️ Introductory prep exercise to the maltese

✔️Accessory work if already training the maltese and/or planche

✔️General all round straight arm strength.

These can be performed as a press as demonstrated here or as an isometric hold, both using any of the usual leg lever positions (tuck, single leg, straddle, full and everything in between).

⚪Full lever position
⚪Full arm support (box)

Progression from there would be to add weight.

We do not offer any walk-in services. All visits must be made by appointment or online class reservations.

The core philosophy of our training is based on learning the fundamentals of bodyweight training to help you feel and move better, no matter what age, shape or size.

We aim to remove the stigma that comes with training at a “gym” and instead offer a training centre that is enjoyable, inspiring and non-judgmental. Our members range from complete beginners to elite athletes from a variety of ages.
