Rona Sailing Project
We are an inclusive sail training charity. Whether you have experience or not, sail training with the Rona Sailing Project is for you. Anyone can sail with us.
Voyages are subsided and available to all. People come from all over the UK and abroad to sail with us. Operating three custom built sail training yachts the Rona Sailing Project runs week long sail training voyages for people aged 14-25. The aim of the voyages are for the young people to acquire a sense of responsibility, resourcefulness and team work. Each year one of the boats takes part in the
Operating as usual

We very much enjoy our lovely pop ins from volunteers old and new.
Yesterday was Richard Cullingford, previously a mate with the Project and also a scout leader who from many years sent us young people from Uckfield Scouts.
He donated a framed photo of an original burgee from Rona - the first one! This is now hanging proudly in the office and thank you Richard! Apologies for the crop but we don't seem to be able to avoid the light bouncing back!
We are often asked why we have a weaver bird on all our boats, certificates and burgees. Here is little history from John Hamilton's 'History of the London Sailing Project'.
It was is 1968 or thereabouts that the daughter of one of the Skippers, Johnny Griffith, who became Fleet Officer in 1972, had the idea of using part of Lord Amory's Coat of Arms as a symbol for the project. The college of Heralds apparently enjoys a pun or play on words. Lord Amory's family had a large textile company in Tiverton so the supporters of his Arms were two Weaver birds. It was a Weaver Bird that was chosen as the Project device.
We are learning all things social media at the moment and as a women of a certain age this has been a very steep learning curve!
So forgive me for all the versions of our 1968 Tall Ships Race but guess what?? This one has music!!

It has been suggested that we create an Amazon Wish List for those things that we would like, but don't necessarily need!
This has become a list of those items but also those thing that we do need....brownies and toilet rolls are essential and will be provided so don't panic!! ๐งป๐งป๐งป However, if that is something you would like to contribute to then we would be very grateful!
If you do decide to gift something then please make sure you include a message so that we can thank you! We really appreciate all the support we get from our supporters so we send you a big thank you for that! What would we do without you! ๐ฅฐ๐ฅฐ

Happy new year to all our followers! ๐ฅณ๐คฉ
We hope you all had a wonderful break and avoided all the Christmas bugs that were going around.
So here we go for another season! If you want to book your young person or yourself on a voyage then we still have availability and you can now book directly via our website. It is very easy!
As we enter 2025 we read a very interesting article about building resilience with young people and we want to remind you of the benefits of sail training and how this can help with issues that young people are experiencing.
Teamwork, outdoor activity, building relationships with peers and adults, fun and the sense of achievement in taking part in a new activity and doing well! Friendships are made that can last a lifetime and we all need friends to help us navigate life and the problems we can experience.
If you know of anyone who would benefit from this experience please ask them to email [email protected] and we can set them on the path of experiencing all of the above.
Come along and give it a go because if you don't try you will never know how great it can be! โต๏ธ๐โ๏ธ
Mental health: Children should be more resilient, say experts The surge in mental health referrals among young people has prompted debate among experts about the cause - and the most effective solution

What a season 2024 has been!
Over 1700 people sailed with us on 3 1/2 boats (Merrilyn was in refit until July) which was amazing!
Thanks to everyone for their support, commitment, dedication and enthusiasm that made this possible.
The team enjoyed a Christmas lunch together yesterday but the office will be open until midday 20 December.
We will be back on 2 January having eaten our body weight in pigs in blankets and quality street ready for 2025! We will see you then.
Merry Christmas everyone!!! ๐
