Today I passed my NKT exam thanks to the extra time I’ve had through isolation, It’s not been easy but I’ve worked my butt off for this & am so utterly relived I’ve finally certified!🙌🏻 - Grateful to my husband Lee Hickman for the support & of course being my exam body .. I literally couldnt have done it without you.
Neurokinetic Therapy has been such an eyeopener for me, it certainly has changed the way I think about pain within the body & has refined my assessment skills like crazy!
This Therapy has become a game changer for myself as a practitioner. I have found tremendous success with this new technique in a very short period of time. However, there is still much to learn and practice with this protocol. It takes time to master the intuitive skill of muscle palpation and manual muscle test.
Bring on the 2nd year !!
As we enter June, I want to thank anyone who read the #mindfulnessmay posts. I was surprised at how hard I found it 'putting myself out there', fearful of people's opinions and judgement. I hope that you have found at least one thing useful and maybe thought about your own unique ways of being in the present moment.

Todays #gratitude: For having the means to talk about something I have so beneficial in my own life. #namaste
- MINDFULNESS MAY - Day 31
For my final day I want to talk about of my favorite ways to be mindful - food!

I love food so much but I used to always eat without thinking - inhaling food and wondering where it's gone, barely remembering what it tasted like. Devastating. Here are some thoughts to on how to enjoy your food more and make better choices.

1. Hungry? What does that really mean? Noticing the sensations and explore your feelings around it. Learning to accept and tolerate hunger will help us to not eat food we don’t really need.
2. As you prepare to eat, notice the textures, sounds, smells and what everything looks like in front of you. Even if this is peeling open a packet!
3. When you take a bite, notice the temperature, the texture and all the different tastes. How does the food feel on your fork or in your hand, then how it feels in your mouth. Notice you how you chew, using your lips, tongue and teeth. Take your time.
4. When you pause or finish again become aware of your body. Notice the feelings of fullness, or emptiness, any movement in your body or any tastes that linger.

Learn to savor the process from start to end!

Today's #gratitude: After catching up on some sleep I spent the afternoon in the sun and went for dinner with Andrews parents. I did my fair share of food appreciation!

What is #nadishodhana?

Also known as alternate nostril breathing, it is a balancing breath; used to quiet the mind before meditation or sleep.

There is no need to force the breathing; try and keep the flow gentle and natural. Keep the mouth closed and breathing quiet - this not a practice for Ujjayi breath.

1. Take your right hand and place the thumb on your right nostril, your index (1st) and middle (2nd+3rd) finger on your forehead and the ring (4th) finger over the left nostril. We will use the ring finger to open or close the left nostril and thumb for the right nostril.
2. To prepare, press your thumb down on the right nostril and breathe out gently through the left nostril. Place the fingers very lightly, there is no need to apply any pressure - just enough to occluded the air flow.
3. Breathe in through left nostril and then gently press the left nostril with the ring finger.
4. Remove the thumb from the right nostril and breathe out from the right.
5. Breathe in from the right nostril, gently press the right nostril with the thumb and exhale from the left.
6. You have now completed one round - Continue inhaling and exhaling from alternate nostrils for another 9 rounds (10 total)

The pattern for one round is: inhale left - exhale right - inhale right - exhale left.

Today's #gratitude: I really enjoy cooking and using new ingredients. The picture shows the beans I used in today's chilli. They are almost too pretty to cook! On to of that I got to see beautiful @shinbelle for a cuppa today. Such a lovely treat!

- MINDFULNESS MAY - Day 28
What is #Ujjayi breathing?

This variation of #pranayama is used to lengthen both your inhale and exhale by gently constricting the opening of the throat. Gently pulling the breath in and gently pushing the breath out against this mild resistance creates a smooth and soothing sound that sounds like the rolling waves of the ocean. This is infact another of it's names; oceanic breathing or victorious breath. However it has also been compared to Darth Vader from Star Wars' breathing... - With your mouth open, try exhaling the sound “HAAAAH”—it’s similar to the sound you make when you’re trying to fog up a mirror. - Now close your mouth and attempt to repeat this sound but instead feeling the air pass through your nose.
- Once you have mastered this on your exhale, use the same method for your inhale - gently constricting the back of your throat as you inhale the sound "SOOOOH". I personally use this breath to calm my nerves. I find the slow and rhythmic noise peaceful and cathartic. However Ujjayi is also useful when you’re doing aerobic exercise such as running or cycling as a way to improve your respiratory efficiency.
This pranayama is fantastic as an anchor because it gives you something to concentrate on both physically and audibly, helping you stay focused and centered. If used in conjunction with yoga, losing control of this breath during your practice means you are likely pushing yourself too far. It's a sign its time to reign yourself in and keep yourself safe.
Here is a lovely article that explains this breath further: www.ekhartyoga.com/articles/a-guide-to-ujjayi-breath

Today's #gratitude: After 15 hours sleep (yes, you heard me right!) I spent the afternoon with Andrews family eating delicious food courtesy of @colin.verona and @allegrachick. Fat and happy today!

- MINDFULNESS MAY - Day 27
How can I start #Pranayama?

One of the first things to learn is a teqhnique called Deerga Swasam. This technique teaches you sequentially breathing with all areas of the lungs.

1. the abdomen
2. the ribcage, and
3. the chest.

This technique should always be comfortable; gradually deepen your breath over time. Try starting with 5 minutes during which your breaths become longer and deeper as you utilise more of your body.

Inhalation:
1. Send the air to the bottom of the lungs by filling the abdomen.
2. Expand the ribcage
3. Finally, fill up the chest - at the top of the inhale, the chest should lift up gently.

Exhalation:
1. Relax the chest, releasing the air naturally.
2. Relax the ribcage
3. Pull in the belly all the way in to complete the exhale.

To deepen your practice and concentration, begin to count how many seconds you are taking to inhale and exhale. Gradually, increase your breaths one second at a time. With time you can work towards a 12:24 ratio of a 12 seconds inhale and a 24 seconds exhale.

TOP TIP: To really connect with your body, place one hand on your belly and the other on your chest. Focus on feeling the movement underneath your hands the the correct order.

Today's #gratitude: I'm struggling to sleep post nights but that did mean I was awake to witness this mornings #thunderstorm 🌩⚡

- MINDFULNESS MAY - Day 24
What are the benefits of #pranayama?

There is increasingly more and more research studies documenting controlled breathing being beneficial for depression, anxiety, PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder), COPD (chronic destructive pulmonary disease), and asthma. But why?

It is thought that deep breathing stimulates the main nerve in the parasympathetic nervous system, the vagus nerve. This increases neurotransmitters in the brain which ripples out to the body to reduce anxiety, slow down your heart rate and lower your blood pressure. This process of 'rest and digest' counters the overstimulation our bodies go through during the 'fight or flight' response caused by daily stress.

On a physical level these techniques teach us to utilise and strengthen the whole range of our respiratory organs including our intercostal muscles, abdominal muscles and diaphragm. We become more efficient at allowing higher volumes of oxygen to reach the body’s cells and tissue. This increased supply to the body can help improve your performance, concentration, memory and will power. In addition, deep breathing is more relaxing as there is less strain on the muscles of the neck and upper chest.
As mentioned yesterday, the mind, body, and breath are intimately connected and can influence each other. So what are you waiting for!? .
Today's #gratitude:
I am grateful that I grew up in the countryside surrounded by nature and open air. I learnt up be comfortable in my own company and being outside still brings me so much comfort.

What are you #grateful for today?

#MHAW17 #mindfulnessmay
- MINDFULNESS MAY - Day 23
Have you ever paid attention to your breathing when your have felt anxious or angry?
Your breathing will fall into a rapid shallow pattern that even recreating intentionally will make your mind start to panic.

"The mind is the king of the senses but the breath is the king of the mind" B.K.S Iyengar

Our breathing is very closely linked to our emotional state; by taking the time to be mindful of our breathing we can alter how we are feeling. One way we can achieve this mastery is through practicing pranayama.

What is #pranayama?
'Prana' means life force or breathing; on the inhale, our breathing brings in oxygen for the creation of energy in our cells and on the exhale, releases the waste product carbon dioxide. 'Ayama' translates as "to extend or draw out". Combine the two and this Sanskrit word means breath control.

Pranayama is a set of breathing techniques where the breath is intentionally altered in order to produce specific results.
There are many different types of techniques but they all require mastery of these four aspects of the breath:

1. Exhalation (rechaka)
2. Inhalation (puraka)
3. Breath retention after inhalation (ontara kumbhaka)
4. Breath retention after exhalation (bahya kumbhaka)

Not only is breathwork free, it can help you reconnect with your body and and move your focus away from the chatter of your mind.

Today's #gratitude: When I am working nightshifts, as I am at the moment, I like to focus and be thankful on the simple things in life. Like a really great coffee and accidental faces in my food that make me smile.
