A tough game today against a side containing plenty of recognised faces, with 1883 Stockport 2nds running out 4-2 winners.

The visitors took the lead through a superb strike from Carl Sutton, who was afforded just a little too much time to get onto his favoured left foot.

After that setback, Villa gradually grew into the game and started to produce some really encouraging passages of play. Mikey Brown found his way into some dangerous positions on a couple of occasions but couldn't quite apply the finishing touch.

In midfield, Connor Walton and James Vickers dictated the tempo well, while Gaz Marsh provided an excellent focal point with his hold-up play. On another day, Jordan Cunningham and Luke Walsh could easily have added to the scoresheet with the opportunities they created.

It was Jordan Cunningham who got Villa back on level terms, powering home a near-post header from a pinpoint James Vickers corner.

Unfortunately, Villa started the second half slowly. A mistimed challenge from Enoch Williams resulted in a penalty, which 1883 confidently converted, before their towering centre-half extended the lead with a header from a corner shortly afterwards.

To Villa's credit, the lads never abandoned the way they wanted to play. However, 1883 added a fourth after Phil Dalton produced a good save from an effort on the edge of the area, only for the striker to react quickest and convert the rebound.

Gaz Marsh deservedly got himself on the scoresheet late on. Jordan Cunningham played an excellent through ball to release him, and although Gaz's first effort was saved by the goalkeeper, he reacted quickest to head home the rebound.

With a depleted squad, the biggest positive was valuable minutes in the legs for everyone involved as preparations continue ahead of the new season.

Man of the Match goes to James Vickers, who produced an outstanding display in central midfield. He controlled the game for long spells, dictated the tempo, delivered the corner for Jordan's goal and thoroughly deserved the award.

FULL TIME | UK Sports U17 1-4 Edgeley Villa FC 💙⚽

A really positive start to pre-season as we came away with a 4-1 victory against a talented UK Sports U17 side.

We found ourselves behind early on after a well-taken goal and, for the opening 20 minutes, struggled to get to grips with the game. Credit to UK Sports, who moved the ball well and caused us plenty of problems.

Our equaliser came after a mix-up between the home defender and goalkeeper, allowing Gaz Marsh to mark his Edgeley Villa debut in style by cleverly looping the ball into the empty net.

Both sides had further chances before the break, and the teams went into half-time level at 1-1.

With eight changes made at half-time, Villa began to take control of the second period. Good work down the left from Jordy Jordan Cunningham and Luke Walsh created the opening for the ever-reliable Rick Kelly to tap home and put us in front.

Luke continued to be a constant threat and was then brought down inside the box, with Jack Atkinson confidently converting the penalty on his return to the club.

Villa looked capable of adding more, although Jack will probably admit he should have squared the ball to Tom Hannan on one attack instead of going alone! Tom soon showed the unselfish option, picking out Rick Kelly for his second goal of the evening to wrap up a deserved 4-1 victory.

A huge thank you to UK Sports U17. They matched us for long spells, never stopped battling and have a very bright future ahead if they stick together. We wish them all the very best for the season.
