Wellington FC Awards Night

Players, staff, family and friends gathered together for the Welly's awards night this Saturday giving everyone a chance to celebrate individual achievements but more importantly reflect on one special season for the club.
Jack Towey picked up the prestigious "spitting their dummy out" award for his reaction to getting subbed after 15 minutes in a must win game, seeing off fierce competition from Mick Donnelly who officially quit the club 4* times. Dan Hulme managed to see off Pete Jackson's mud wrestling antics to clinch the funniest moment award with his clinical finish against Holditch Miners. Adam Copestake picked up goal of the season for his wonder strike from distance against Silverdale along with most assists and shared the top goalscorer with Ben Jackson. Eyebrows were raised when Dan Ayres picked up the "miss of the season" award, with many feeling like Russ Grocott got away with one there. Ben Jackson picked up "most fines" after easily being £100 clear of second place and finally Welly's number 1 Matty Banks mopped up fans, player's and manager's player of the season. commemorative shirts were presented to Welly manager Alex Lomas, assistant gaffer Jordan Davies and Nat. Nat has supported the club every step along the way, putting food on every Sunday, hosting our events and anything else the club needed. She is a massive part of our club and is appreciated by everyone connected to the Welly. He wasn't there Saturday, but a special mention to Brett Lindop whos work behind the scenes is the heartbeat of this club. Finally a huge thank you to all the wives, girlfriends, mothers and fathers for showing up week in week out to support the club. The players and management team are already raring to go next season!

Match Report:

The final game of the season saw the Welly make one final trip to the OSSMA in what was an "away" game in name alone as so many people came down to hopefully see the boys get that all important three points to seal the league title. Lambourne have chased the Welly down all season and knew a win would leave them needing only a point from their final game against Alsager on Thursday to win the title themselves.
Barring a small hail shower, it looked to be really good weather wise but there was a very strong wind both teams had to deal with.

First Half:

The first half saw the Welly play against the wind which caused major problems with goal kicks barely reaching the halfway line. Lambourne had the better of the opening stages and were rewarded with a well struck free kick from the left side sailing into the top corner. The Welly were really struggling to get into the game and would have been happy to go in at half time at only 1-0, however a Ollie Heath low driven free kick caused havoc leaving Chinny the job of prodding the ball into an empty net at the far post to level the game. This goal rejuvenated the Welly as they started to see more of the ball however it was Lambourne who came the closest to scoring again when a 25 yard thunderbolt needed an incredible save from Banksy to keep it out.

HT Lambourne Reserves 1-1 Wellington

Second Half:

The Welly had the wind second half and knew they had to make it count, however a disastrous start saw Pete Jackson deemed to foul the Lambourne attacker. Confusion occured on whether it was in or outside the box due to poor line marking but the final decision was penalty. Banksy made it 3 saves out of 4 from the penalty spot but could do nothing to stop the rebound being hammered home. Almost immediately from the restart a long ball saw Danny Ayres brought down giving the Welly a penalty of their own. Adam Copestake made no mistake from the spot to level the game again at 2-2. The Welly really utilized the wind and continued to cause problems looking to take the lead. It was Danny Ayres again causing problems and after being clipped, attempted to stay up but with no advantage, the referee had no choice but to point to the penalty spot for a third time. Adam stepped up again to dispatch giving the Welly the lead for the first time in the game. With 20 minutes left Jack Towey headed the ball back into the danger zone and Welly captain Ollie Heath was on hand to put the ball away to make it 4-2 causing wild scenes from the sidelines. There was still time for another twist in an already action packed game as Lambourne did pull one back setting up a very nervy final 10. The Welly defended well and with 5 minutes of normal time left, a miss-hit goal kick landed at the feet of Danny Ayres leaving him one on one. The Welly winger held his nerve to smartly convert sparking wild celebrations from players and fans alike. A few defensive changes were made to see out 7 minutes of stoppage time but Lambourne could not find an answer as the game finished 5-3 to The Welly.

FT Lambourne Reserves 3-5 Wellington

A game that lived up to its title decider name, both teams put on a show. A special mention to Lambourne who have pushed us all season. We knew we could not afford a slip up and thats a testament to how well Lambourne have played all season. Looking forward to more battles next season.

On a personal note, its been an absolute joy following this team this season. So proud of all the players and the unsung heroes behind the scenes. A few lows but so many highs capped off by winning the league title unbeaten. Finally, a massive thank you to all the people who have come down to support the lads. Torrential rain and minus temperatures did not stop you from coming down to show your support and I think I speak for everyone at the club when I say its very much appreciated. Signing off with one final statement..

Match Report:

The Welly's penultimate game of the season saw Alsager visit the OSSMA. The Welly ran out 4-3 winners in the reverse fixture which meant as always, the game would not be taken for granted.
It was a less than ideal start as with less than 10 minutes on the clock a penalty was awarded after the ball struck Jack Towey's hand after a wicked deflection off the knee. This resulted in probably the save of the season as Banksy guessed right and got a strong hand behind the penalty that was hit with a lot of venom. Alsager defended well from open play but could do nothing to prevent a Jack Gibbs header breaking the deadlock from a teasing Adam Copestake corner 10 minutes from half time. The Welly doubled the lead 5 minutes later as another Copestake corner this time found Dan Cosby who flicked the ball to the back stick for Pete Jackson to put away.

HT Wellington 2-0 AFC Alsager

The Welly began the second half in the same way they finished the first, dictating the play in search of the third goal to put the game to bed. The moment came in the 70th minute when Adam Copestake did well to get down the left flank. His pass inside found Danny Ayres who couldn't get his initial shot off but did well to hold his composure and find the shot that took a wicked deflection leaving the goalkeeper no option but to watch the ball trickle over the line.

FT The Wellington 3-0 AFC Alsager

A great performance to keep the momentum up as we head into our final fixture of the season. We would all like to wish Alsager all the best for their remaining fixtures. The Welly return to action this Sunday against Lambourne Reserves.

Match Report:

The Welly travelled to Keele Uni to face RB Silverdale, the reverse fixture resulted in arguably our best performance of the season and the Welly were hoping for more of the same.
With 3 minutes on the clock, a seemingless nothing moment resulted in a red card brandished to the Silverdale full back due to language. The Welly wasted no time making the numerical advantage count as an Adam Copestake corner was met by Chinny at the far post who guided the ball in to make it 1-0. The Welly contunued to dictate play looking for a second and were guilty of missing some chances. They were left to rue these missed chances as up the other end the ball was played into the box and the Silverdale attacker did well to shield the ball however went down under pressure from Jack Towey resulting in a penalty which was cooly despatched to level the game.

HT RB Silverdale 1-1 Wellington

Second Half:

The second half was a stark contrast to the first with Silverdale first to everything and the Welly failing to really get a foothold in the game. Silverdale were rewarded in the 58th minute when despite, a great double save from Welly number 1 Banksy, the ball fell to the Silverdale attacker for a third time who made no mistake to well and truly turn the game on its head. Silverdale had a chance to put the game beyond the Welly 5 minutes later but the post came to the rescue following a one on one opportunity. In an attempt to get back into the game, Welly centre back Ant Malbon was sent up front to utlize the flick on, however his moment came in an unfamiliar position on right wing. After driving forward down the wing his ball in was initially brought down by Jack Gibbs who laid it off to Adam. He managed to get his body in front of the ball and was clattered leaving the ref no choice but to point to the spot. He stepped up and despatched the resulting penalty. Both teams had chances to win it at the end as the game became stretched with both teams desperate for a winner however the game finished 2-2.
A tough game with plenty of lessons to be learned for the players to take into the final 2 games of the season. Hats off to RB Silverdale who despite going down to 10 early on, have every right to feel disheartened only picking up a point. Adam Copestake picked up the man of the match with his none stop running and nerves of steel for the penalty. We return to league action next week in our final home game of the season against Alsager.
