A good article today by the BBC today reminding why visitors shouldn’t feed the Dartmoor ponies.

I know it feels kind. But it’s one of the most harmful things visitors can do.

❌ It makes them ill. Our food isn’t a pony’s natural diet. Even apples and carrots can cause colic, choking, and serious digestive problems.

❌ It puts them on the road. Ponies quickly link cars with food and start waiting in car parks and laybys. The Dartmoor Livestock Protection Officer reports 25 ponies hit by vehicles this year, and 18 of them died.

❌ It changes their behaviour. Ponies that expect food can turn pushy, or even aggressive, when it stops coming.

❌ It’s against the law. Feeding them breaks Dartmoor’s byelaws, and people who keep doing it could face action under the Animal Welfare Act.
These ponies are semi-wild, and every one of them belongs to a local farmer or commoner. They don’t need our help to find food. They’ve thrived on the moor for centuries.

What you can do instead:
- Enjoy them from a distance
- Slow down (40mph max) and expect ponies on the road
- Keep dogs under control
- Take your litter home (including apple cores)

The best way to show love for a Dartmoor pony is to leave it wild. 💚

Glorious day out with these two fabulous humans from Texas.

The mist swirled and cleared to reveal the tors, the views opening up bit by bit like Dartmoor was putting on a show just for us.

This extended summer weather means the guiding season is still going strong - more days like this to come.

Spotted today: Fly Agaric

The classic fairytale toadstool, scarlet cap, white flecks, straight out of a storybook. This one was growing at the edge of a birch stand, since fly agaric partners up with tree roots rather than growing on open moor.

Folklore has tied it to fairy rings, pixies, and even flying reindeer myths. Just as pretty to admire as it is unwise to touch - it’s poisonous, so this one’s a look-don’t-touch spot.
