A successful season both on and off the pitch was brought to a close on Saturday.

The Langbaurgh League XI finished the season in 5th place. Over the course of the season they won thirteen and lost six with only two games being cancelled after a brilliant summer weather wise. In the cups, we won both the Ideson and Gjers Cups 🏆

The club would like to thank everyone who followed the team home and away, the attendances at home have been brilliant all season and we look forward to much of the same and more next season!

Stafford headed to Norton to take on Ingleby Barwick, in the last game of the season.

With Stafford guaranteed to finish the in 5th position, the plan was to give everyone a bowl. Winning the toss Acko choose to take the field.

Nelly, swapped his gloves for the new ball, with Charlie the other opening bowler. The pair bowled well and it was Charlie who took the first wicket in the 8th over. Syed and Tommy replaced them and it only took Tommy 5 balls to take the 2nd wicket brilliantly caught by Harry Acko.

Opener Saleem and no.4 Shoaib were batting well and took Inglebys score to 150-2 from 24 overs. Stafford then brought on their 5th change bowler Wilson. By the end of the over both batsmen were out and Ingleby were 155-4.

Stafford kept changing the bowling around with both Ackos bowling in tandem. Acko taking 2 wickets and Harry taking his 1st Langbaurgh league wicket, well caught in the deep by Charlie. Ingleby had their innings finished in the 39th over with a score of 233. Wilson taking 3-15 and Tommy 2-9.

Stafford then gave father and son Atif and Musa the opportunity to bat together by opening. Sadly Musa was out 1st ball with the 5th ball of the opening over. Stafford then found themsleves 1-2 when Syed was out 1st ball with the last ball in the over.

Brad and Atif recovered the score well before Brad was out for 14, Stafford now 52-3. Wilson after a superb season with the bat could only add 5 runs to the tally. When Atif was out for 47, Stafford were 83-5 from 19 overs.

Tommy Wright, living out his deepest fantasy of Batting with his idol Ollie Sherwood, the pair rotated the strike well and ticked the score along nicely. Stafford had reached 136-5 when Ollie feathered a catch to the keeper, Ollie out for 35 and Stafford 136-6.

Nelly joined Tommy. Nelly in his usuall style hit a couple of big sixes in his first 10 balls faced. Again the pair ran singles well and batted with composure, taking as many singles as possible then dispatched the loose ball to the boundary.

Nelly Reached his 50 in the 37th over and Stafford were 223-6, but Tommy was just 2 runs short of his first ever 50 with 10 runs needed to win. He reached his 50 and then with the scored tied sent the ball to the boundary to win the game for The Place and ending on 58*. Nelly ending with 57*.

A 13th win of the season in the league and another score of 230+ chased down. What a season it has been on and off the Pitch, a real squad effort and some brilliant performances individually and collectively over the season.

During the last three weeks, Stafford have entertained Thimbleby in the last home game of the season, followed by two away trips to Castleton and table toppers Hutton Rudby respectively.

The game against Thimbleby went the way of the home side. Thimbleby winning the toss and electing to bat, posted 163 all out with Dawson and Jabarhkeil scoring half centuries. With the ball, the Stafford bowlers all bowled well and chipped in with wickets, but it was Wilson who cleaned the tail up with 3-9 off 2.5 overs.

Stafford chased the score with ease, knocking it off in 22 overs for the loss of 1 wicket. Nelly set the ball rolling with a hard hitting 42, but it was Ollie who carried his bat for 89* that took Stafford to the total. A great way to end what has been a remarkable home campaign on and off the pitch. Great weather, great matches and even better support!

The second game, Stafford headed to the picturesque ground of Castleton. Winning the toss, Stafford chose to bat on an overcast day where the threat of rain loomed all afternoon.

With that in mind, after 31 overs and the score 201-4, Stafford declared. Nelly again in the runs, scoring a briliant 79. Wilson was unlucky to fall one short of another 50, well caught by the bowler. Ollie finishing with 38*. Stafford opted for pace off bowling for the majority of the innings to try and get through as many overs as quickly as possible. Acko bowling a quick 10 overs taking 4-30 and Syed bowled a fruitless but very good 10 overs for just 44 runs. Musa took 2-24 in his 5 overs. R Heldt made things interesting with a well played 68 but his wicket at 175-8, was the end of the resistance, Castleton eventually all out for 178.

Top of the table Hutton were up next. Needing two wins from two games to claim the Divison 1 title, Hutton won the toss on a new pitch and elected to bowl. Stafford struggled with a slow pitch and some good Hutton bowling to post a score of 74 all out from 37 overs. Only Mark Elliott with 13 managed double figures. Hutton kept their big hitters in the hutch and lost two early wickets both to the bowling of Tommy, who was making a lot of things happen with the new ball. Hutton 8-2, Dom Knight steadied the nerves and he and Armistead took the score to 46, when Syed replacing Acko, took the wicket of Armistead. Knight then followed the next over, Tommy getting another well deserved wicket and Hutton 46-4 were in the hands of Rose and Crawley. The pair took the attack to the bowlers and soon got past the required total. Hutton ending 76-4 from 20 overs and moving within one win of the league title.

Up next for Stafford is the final league game of what has been a brilliantly successful season, away against Ingleby Barwick on Norton Pitch 2.

A huge congratulations to Chris Wilson on becoming the first player in the clubs 123 year history to score 1000 club runs in a season 🎉

Reaching the feat in 37 games, with 6 x 50’s and 2 x 100’s. Including 126 x 4’s and 21 x 6’s.

With four games yet to play there’s still plenty more runs available 🏏

Stafford welcomed Maltby to The Place in the inaugural Thornaby Airfield Shield. Stafford Vs Maltby was a regular fixture for many years in the Langbaurgh league, the plan to compete for the shield each season will revive the old local rivalry.

Brad won the toss and elected to bat. A small shake up to the batting order saw Wilson and Brad open. Wilson needing just 6 runs to reach 1000 runs for the season. The pair got off to a good start Wilson passed the 1000 run milestone but fell 3 short of the games 35 retirement rule. Brad soon reached 35 off 23 balls and retired. Nelly in at 3 helped take the score to 99 when he was unfortunate to be bowled for 20, 99-2 the score. Quill in at 5 took the attack to the Maltby bowlers and scored 35 off just 13 balls. Mike Mayberry hit four 4s to reach 16 and Stafford total after 16 overs 165-5.

Stafford opened the bowler with their 2 wicket keepers, Nelly and Quill. The pair bowling 2 overs each. It was Quill that got the breakthrough caught by Nelly, his first wicket for Stafford. He then took another and Maltby were 29-2. Mihir was next to fall for 21 by the bowling of Joe Norman, again the catch taken by Nelly. Maltby 72-3. Will Deeks staged a fight back scoring 28 off 23 before he was well caught by Joe, the bowler Mike Mayberry. Charlie Lythgoe reached 35 retirement off 19 balls. Maltby finished their 16 overs 142-6.

A good game and a close contest with Stafford coming out on top getting their name on the Thornaby Airfield Sheild. Thank you to Maltby for the invitation to start up the annual match.

On a much cooler day than the recent weather, Stafford won the toss and elected to bowl.

With both teams missing a few players it seemed an evenly matched game.

Stafford struck in the 1st over, Tom removing the opener for 0. Loftus then settled and got off to a bit of a flyer as they reached 80-1 from 17 overs before Brad had Ramzan caught for 20.

Loftus now 82-2 and with Ranzan gone, it was the other opener M Ahmed that was dealing the damaging blows as he helped the score on to 127 before Acko, in his first over saw him advancing and bowled a wider delievery that spun past the bat and was well stumped by Quill.

Acko’s next over was a double wicket maiden, coupled with a Musa wicket as he took the ball from the other end and Loftus found themselves 141-6 off 25 overs.

S Bowes batted well with help from a few other batsmen and finished his innings unbeaten on 65 which had propelled Loftus to a very competitive innings total of 234-9. Acko with a really good spell taking 5-33 from 8 overs.

Stafford’s reply got off to the dream start. Brad, who by his own admission has not been batting well finally found his form again and everything his bat touched was middled to the boundary.

His 50 coming off just 26 balls. He and Quill put on 103 for the first wicket as Stafford stormed towards the r***e. Quill fell first chipping one to midwicket which started a simply remarkable Stafford collapse.

Wilson came and went before Brad was brilliantly caught by a low diving catch at mid-on to end his superb innings of 80 from just 42 balls.

Stafford fell to 119-6 in no time as the wickets tumbled and still required 115 runs to win which now looked unlikely. Acko was in at five and after a good midweek knock looked to punish the bad balls.

I Hussain and A Winspear, the bowlers which had done the damage having 4 overs each left, kept things tight, but the rare loose ball was helped usually over the rope for six by Acko.

Tom and Acko both batted with assurance and played very few if any bad shots. Then the change bowlers back on, the batting pair ran singles well and when Acko was on strike he waited for the bad ball and sent it packing.

Stafford had plenty of overs but few wickets as the pair took the score to 204 when Acko was given out LBW.

Tom was joined by Joe Norman next in. A quality innings from Tom and some vital runs by Joe got Stafford to 233-7.

Joe was stumped with 8 balls remaining. Musa was in at 9 and ran a quick single first ball to tie the scores. Then with the penultimate ball of the match, Musa hit a lofted cover drive over the head of daddy Pearson for four and the game was won.

A thrilling tie, an epic chase and a well earned win for The Place 🩵
