Sometimes you have to dig deep...

This stone quarry reminded me that sometimes you have to dig deep to find something valuable. It may look ugly, it may get messy, it may feel uncomfortable or painful.

Digging deep in therapy can be really hard work. It can be tempting to give up sometimes, but in sticking with it, chipping away at one stone after another, it can help us work through the good, the bad and the ugly to find what really matters.

Sometimes, avoiding or covering up the painful and uncomfortable parts of ourselves can actually be more exhausting and distressing than taking the time to dismantle it all in a safe place with someone who will not judge you, is there as your champion and believes in you.

So what is different about coaching?

💫Unlike mentoring, it is non-directive and non-advisory, and if I am doing my job as well as I hope I am, coaching will generally be short-term (approximately 6 to 8 weeks) although some people like to return to coaching for different issues at a later date.

💫Essentially, coaching should empower you to recognise your own strengths, your decision- making ability, and help you untangle the knots 🪢 and stumbling blocks.

💫It is mainly focused on the present, looking forward... examining obstacles or something that feels overwhelming and breaking it down into smaller, achievable steps.

💫It should offer non-judgemental, empathic support, and feel totally, emotionally safe.

See below for researcher's definitions... they say it better than I can!

"Coaching consists of well- defined goals...generally aligned with clear expectations and outcomes." (Hussey &Campbell-Meier, 2020)

Coaching is a way to "unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them – a facilitation approach" (Whitmore, 1992)

"Coaching is a collaborative solution focused, result orientated process... the main purpose of coaching is considered to be on improving wellbeing through self-awareness and learning."

Have you ever wondered what coaching actually is? It's not being told or advised what to do, which may surprise some people!

Therapist malpractice headlines...

There are some deeply concerning headlines about appalling, abusive, and unregulated therapists at the moment, which understandably could leave potential clients feeling very anxious about whether therapists can be trusted.

However, in order to be a counsellor in the UK, they are highly trained in both practice and evidence-based theory, and should be registered to a professional body, adhering to their standards and ethical framework.

All therapists are required to complete CPD hours each year to remain on the register. Many therapists add to their qualifications with courses after qualifying through continuing professional development courses and additional training.

There are some simple do's and don't's when it comes to choosing a counsellor... make sure you choose wisely.

CHECK:
✨️What are their qualifications? Are they happy to show you certification?
✨️Are they registered to a professional body? Ask for their membership number and check the register online.
✨️Make sure they have at least a Level 4 Diploma in Counselling
✨️Are they complying with GDPR data protection regulations? Is your personal information safe?
✨️Do they have a contract? If not, why not? Are you happy with that? If they do, are you happy with the contents?

✨️Above all else, trust your instincts. If you do not feel comfortable, seek advice. The BACP have a helpline number for counselling concerns advice if you feel unable to discuss matters with your therapist...
