Parting words from my client yesterday morning. The way I see it, my job is to show you what your body is capable of when given the right information. To give you more confidence in your body, and inspire a love of movement, well Pilates, and then you’ll just want to keep moving.

This photo popped up in my memories from 12 years ago with Lo**ta San Miguel, and it made me think about something I’ve been mulling over recently.
There was a time when being a Pilates teacher meant seeking out the source or as near to it as you could get. We investigated, we travelled, we invested, we put ourselves in rooms where we knew we’d be challenged in front of our peers because that’s where the real learning happens.
I miss the days where we sought out the best training we could get to, afford, or that piqued our curiosity. Now I often see people asking for the easiest, quickest, most convenient route. And I get it… life is busy and some people just don’t get that Pilates is a method. But it’s like anything in life. Short cuts rarely cut it, not in depth, integrity, passion or knowledge.
I also get that you don’t know what you don’t know. But now Pilates is so accesible to find out more about, that doesn’t even stack up as a reason.
The “Reformer Pilates” trend won’t last forever. People will start to realise like they did with the Mat, that Pilates has lots to offer and they will seek out teachers and studios who can offer more.
So if you have been thinking about training to teach Pilates, investigate fully, attend classes with various teachers in person and online, ask the teachers you enjoy where they trained. Don’t just rely on the nearest, most convenient or cheapest being able to offer you a sound training springboard.

I recently sold my contemporary Cadillac to buy a Classical Cadillac. The person who bought my Cadillac sold their other brand contemporary Cadillac to buy mine. Which I thought was lovely as we both felt we were graduating.
This reminded me of a conversation with my brother about boxing training years ago when he said to me “there are levels to this”. And that’s it isn’t it.
I originally trained comprehensively in Contemporary Pilates which led me to a comprehensive Classical Pilates training which led me to further study and search out more Pilates educators. All of which has benefited my practice and teaching and in turn my clients at the studio. You don’t know what you don’t know and sometimes it’s not until your in something that you start to open your eyes to what else is out there.
Of course Pilates should be one universal thing but that horse has long bolted.
Stay curious
There are levels to this…..

Pilates everyday helps you work, play and rehab. That really is part of its beauty it meets you wherever your body and mind are today. Perhaps it’s perimenopause, perhaps it’s just wear and tear but my left shoulder is needing a little more support a little more regularly nowadays.
Workout filmed after teaching my lovely Saturday morning classes yesterday, which honestly doesn’t feel like work. 🫶
Vids slightly sped up.

It’s been lovely welcoming new people to the studio for the Fundamentals Course. As well as working with people who’ve been coming for years who want to delve deeper into Pilates and their practice. Watching their enthusiasm, self confidence and trust in the process grow is such an amazing pleasure.
So much so, I have added some more dates for workshops for people returning or starting Pilates, enthusiasts and teachers wanting to explore the method more.
Links can be found in my bio for 2 additional 4 week Pilates Fundamentals Courses, two Mat workshops based on the 34 exercises from Joseph Pilates book, Return to Life through Contrology; and there is a space available on Novembers Reformer Masterclass.
If you have any question just let me know.

Pilates, it’s all got twisted. And, you know it’s all about the money when you see a post on another social media platform where someone is saying they are about to open a “Reformer Pilates Studio” but as they have NO experience of Pilates they are looking for a teacher to assist the set up of the business. Clearly they have bags of passion about the method and can’t wait to help people. See their body confidence grow, improve their movement, strength and flexibility or move without pain.
It’s so infuriating to watch. But what’s more infuriating is when a student tells you they’ve spent 5 years at a studio before yours and they are now angry at the amount of time and money they invested there seeing now, they made no progress. No progress in strength, stability, flexibility and no progress in exercises practised or understanding the point of why they were doing anything.
I don’t know what the answer is other than us constantly trying to educate people on social media about what genuine Pilates is so they can make informed choices.
I’ve heard in some classes they never use the box on the Reformer or do any exercises with feet in straps.
If they still prefer jumping around doing flows on the bed of a Reformer but know it’s not Pilates then all well and good.
Joseph Pilates apparently used to say he was ahead of his time. I don’t know how many podcasts I’ve listened to in the last year where influencers talk about mind body connection, how breathing is so important, connecting with nature, looking after your feet and foot strength and so much more, all stuff Joseph Pilates talked about. Studies have shown how people’s movement, strength, stability has improved from practising Pilates. We don’t need to try and reinvent his work. We need to introduce more people to it so they can reap the genuine rewards and not jump on the bandwagon of the latest “Pilates” fad thinking they are doing Pilates.
