2024 CLAPHAM NORTH MOT MAZDA MX-5 SUPERCUP @ SNETTERTON - APRIL 6/7 2024 - RACE WEEKEND REPORT

The second Clapham North MOT Mazda MX-5 SuperCup weekend of 2024 at Snetterton promised to produce just as much action and excitement on track as the opening races of the year had done at Silverstone a few weeks prior. The Norfolk’s long straights meant the tow was set to be just as strong here as it had been on Silverstone’s International circuit, meaning overtaking was going to be plentiful.

Patrick Fletcher produced the laps needed to claim fastest time for both races one and two, the second grid set by the second fastest time from qualifying. He lined up on pole on Saturday alongside defending Pro champion Aidan Hills on the front row. Tom Griffiths, Leigh Britten and Joe Wiggin made up the top five starters, and James Blake-Baldwin made a return with six fastest.

Race one turned out to be a four car fight for victory all race long. From pole, Fletcher led from Hills, Britten and Griffiths, and while Patrick was never headed for the entire 20 minutes, the three cars behind him all took their turns to try and unseat him. First Hills tried, then Britten and then Griffiths, but none of them could deny Fletcher from his second Pro class win of 2024 as he took the flag first. With Griffiths clinching second, Hills third and Britten just missing out on the podium, all four were covered by just over 0.6 seconds at the flag after a tense 20 minutes. Joe Wiggin completed the Pro and overall top five.

In Club Class, Aimee Watts recovered from a less than satisfactory qualifying to charge her way to the head of the class and her second win of the year, managing to beat teammate Wilbur Tiley in second and Ollie Hall in third on the class podium.

Race two on Sunday morning would turn out to be a special occasion in particular for one driver. Fletcher again took pole, but Hills would lead the opening lap at the line whilst Griffiths tailed the pole man in third. After a couple of laps, Griffiths took second from Fletcher and shared the place back and forth over the next few laps whilst the pair kept the #1 car in their sights. Heading on to the last lap, Griffiths was applying heavy pressure to Hills and eventually managed to make the pass that took him to an emotional first ever MX-5 SuperCup win.

Tom topped Pro class from Hills, Fletcher, Britten and Wiggin, while Aimee Watts again worked her way to the head of Club class for her second win of the weekend from Tiley and Hall, further extending her points lead.

The partially reversed grid allowed Sam Heading to steal the lead of race three from Nic Grindrod at the start, and it was his for the first three laps until a fast starting Griffiths found a gap to slip by on lap four. Sadly, Tom’s hopes of a second SuperCup win were dashed when he was tapped into a spin and tagged by another car, forcing him out of the race. This left Fletcher out in front, having worked his way past Heading and then keeping him at bay to secure another race win. Heading was able to maintain P2 for his first podium of the year, while Britten also took to the rostrum again in third.

It was a complete lock out of Club class for Aimee Watts, meanwhile, as she completed the hat-trick of class wins with Hall second and Jim Barratt taking his first podium since joining the championship from the BMW Compact Cup.

In Masters, wins were split between guest driver Simon Baldwin, Nic Grindrod and Oliver Allwood, with Oliver still remaining top of the respective points table after six races.

The Mazda MX-5 SuperCup paddock has descended em masse to Snetterton to get down to testing today ahead of the second weekend of 2024 - once again the field has been out there showing off their colours, including a certain four time BTCC champion Colin Turkington who is back for more after Silverstone!

2024 CLAPHAM NORTH MOT MAZDA MX-5 SUPERCUP @ SNETTERTON - APRIL 6/7 2024 - RACE WEEKEND PREVIEW

We left 2023 thinking that the Clapham North MOT Mazda MX-5 SuperCup couldn’t possibly get more competitive than it had been throughout the last 12 months. Come Silverstone, not only did we discover this year’s pack could do just that, but somehow they even managed to kick it into all new levels. Now as the championship progresses on to Snetterton in Norfolk, there’s almost no telling what’s in store this time.

Unlike the last couple of seasons, Silverstone didn’t see just one driver run away with proceedings and dominate. Instead, the lead group was overloaded with so much of the usual cut and thrust MX-5 SuperCup spectacle we’ve grown accustomed to, and was even more competitive than usual. Three different winners in defending Pro champ Aidan Hills, Patrick Fletcher and Leigh Britten, plus a whole host of podium finishers and top five drivers meant there’s no telling of a definitive favourite, certainly not after just three races.

With all other results collated, Fletcher comes to Snetterton as the Pro class points leader with a six point advantage ahead of Hills in second and then Joe Wiggin in third, meaning just twelve separates the top three. Wiggin will have been pleased with the progress made with the SuperCup car, as he aims to keep both Fletcher and Hills in his sights come the conclusion of the weekend. Britten and Stott complete the Pro class top five, Britten on a high from his Silverstone win and Stott also looking solid with a best of fourth from the opening weekend.

Other Pro class racers who are certain to be in the mix will be Tom Griffiths, Sam Heading, Oliver Allwood, Jack Sycamore, James Cossins, Jack Brewer and Nic Grindrod, while former champion James Blake-Baldwin also makes his first appearance of the year this weekend too. Plus after his Silverstone cameo, it appears that four time BTCC champion Colin Turkington quite enjoyed his first MX-5 SuperCup outing so much that he’s decided to have another go! Racing once more as a guest, Turkington will be hoping to make another strong impression this time as he continues his pre-season preparations.

One driver who will sadly be missing from Snetterton onwards is Will Blackwell-Chambers after his Silverstone incident in race one has left him on the sidelines while he recovers. The entire MX-5 SuperCup wishes him well and hopes for a speedy recovery to see him back on the grid as soon as possible.

For the Club class, Aimee Watts left Silverstone with a class win and a pair of second places to put her top of the standings here by just a point from Ollie Hall, followed by Clive Powles, Bruce Robinson and newcomer Jim Barratt in the top five. This year’s Club class battle looks like it’s going to be just as intriguing as Pro, especially with several drivers starting to come together in terms of pace. Watts has made good progress from 2023, Hall is proving to potentially to be a favourite going forwards, while Powles, Robinson, Steve Kite and Barratt are all experienced hands with points to prove.

Also keep an eye on Watts’ teammate Wilbur Tiley, as lost points after being involved in the incident with Blackwell-Chambers means he lost valuable results and will have to start making up the deficit from this weekend onwards.

2024 CLAPHAM NORTH MOT MAZDA MX-5 SUPERCUP @ SILVERSTONE - MARCH 16/17 2024 - RACE WEEKEND REPORT

2023 went down in history as arguably the most competitive Clapham North MOT Mazda MX-5 SuperCup season to date, after Aidan Hills battled his rivals to the end after early success in the first half of the season. That concluded in the Pro Class title, but for 2024 his new challenge would be to defend the #1 on the door. Silverstone’s International circuit, the same venue that had crowned champions in ‘23, played host to the opening salvo of ‘24 - and it appeared the field had tightened up somewhat.

Less than a second covered the first ten cars in qualifying, with Patrick Fletcher taking pole with Hills on the front row next to him, ahead of Tom Griffiths, Oliver Allwood, Joe Wiggin and co. Fletcher and Hills immediately began dicing for the lead whilst third place downwards was contested by several top drivers all vying for the same piece of tarmac at once in typical SuperCup fashion.

Soon enough, the pack from third backwards were on the tail of the two leaders, the front running pack growing larger and larger by the lap. Eventually Hills made a pass stick into Vale before half distance and held everyone back for the next few minutes. A red flag was called after an incident between Will Blackwell-Chambers and Wilbur Tiley, which eventually saw the result called. Hills was declared overall and Pro winner from Fletcher and Joe Wiggin, while Aimee Watts was given her first Club class win as a result ahead of Steve Kite and Kamal Kalsi.

Sunday’s first race was wet, and even though Hills initially led from P1, Fletcher’s pace in the wet seemed to be unmatchable and after taking the lead before the end of lap one, he was never headed for the remainder of the 20 minutes. More frantic back and forth battles raged behind them initially before a brief safety car bunched the pack back up again early on.

Fletcher continued on in the lead until the flag to win, with Wiggin moving up to second and leaving Hills to battle hard with Jack Sycamore and Sam Heading to hold on to a third place finish. Ollie Hall also took his first Club class win of the year, ahead of Watts in second and Clive Powles in third.

Back on dry track for race three, Alex Stott led the partially reversed grid early on from team leader Hills, before the pair traded places after a couple of laps. Leigh Britten was hot on their tails in third, powering round the outside of Stowe for second and then applying pressure to Hills until he was past him outside of Vale. Those behind him didn’t give him one second to relax over the next few laps, but an off for Kamal Kalsi brought the race to a premature halt in the end. Britten was declared victorious from Fletcher and Hills, with Ollie Hall again taking the Club class win from Watts and Powles.

Masters class was dominated all weekend by Oliver Allwood, with Nic Grindrod, Martin Tolley, George Grant and Clive Powles all sharing podiums too.

Along with many of the regular runners, the grid also featured four time British Touring Car champion Colin Turkington making a guest appearance as something of a pre-season warm-up. He managed to run around the top 10 all weekend and appeared to enjoy his first outing in the championship.
