We often think of the mind and body as two separate things. But are they?

In Daoism, we’re understood as one interconnected organism.

Modern science explores something similar through embodied cognition and interoception, our awareness of what’s happening inside the body.

Take anxiety. Racing thoughts, increased heart rate, altered breathing and muscular tension.

Where exactly is the anxiety? In the mind or the body?

Perhaps it’s a pattern occurring throughout the whole organism.

This is what makes Qigong so interesting. We’re not simply using the body to calm the mind. We’re working with the whole human being.

Mind and body are different aspects of one living process.

Strength is one thing. Being able to use it is another.

We often measure strength by how much weight someone can lift.

But what about how well they can move?

Can you squat comfortably? Get down to the floor and back up again? Move through your hips, knees and ankles without feeling restricted?

A deep squat is a wonderful example of strength and mobility working together.

💪 Strength: The muscles of the legs and hips produce and control force throughout the movement.

🦴 Mobility: The ankles, knees and hips need sufficient freedom of movement to allow the body to descend comfortably.

🧠 Coordination: The nervous system coordinates multiple joints and muscles to maintain balance and control.

⚖️ Stability: Being able to control your body through a larger range of motion requires more than simply having flexible muscles.

And here’s the important part.

Mobility without strength can leave us unable to control the ranges we have. Strength without sufficient mobility can limit how we use it.

The two should develop together.

Not everyone needs to squat incredibly deep, and individual anatomy will influence what’s comfortable. But maintaining the ability to move well, with strength and control, is something worth investing in.

Because ultimately, training isn’t just about what you can do in the gym.

It’s about preserving your freedom and functionality outside it.

You can’t transform one part of yourself while ignoring everything else.

Your body, mind and energy are not separate systems. They’re constantly influencing one another.

Yet most approaches to health and fitness focus on just one or two things.

Lift weights. Eat better. Do more cardio. Lose weight.

All important. But nothing works in isolation.

Poor sleep affects your energy. Low energy affects your movement. Your thinking influences your habits. Your nutrition affects your recovery. Your strength determines what your body is capable of.

Everything is connected.

This is why I developed Five Element Fitness, bringing together five essential elements:

🔥 MOVEMENT | Ignite
✨ ENERGY | Cultivate
🧠 MINDSET | Plan
💧 NUTRITION | Nourish
🌳 STRENGTH | Build

Not simply to help people lose weight or build muscle, but to improve their entire physical, mental and energetic wellbeing.

When you work out certain energy points, they attract Qi. This causes a “hot spot” where you can feel the resistance or support of the energy and can’t get the hands to touch the area on the body.

With your energy field expanded, you can now hold gestures, interact and meditate with this new flow of information.

☯️ QIGONG, NEIGONG & NEIDAN — WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

In my own practice I explore methods that could be categorised as Qigong, Neigong and Neidan.

But I generally use Qigong as the umbrella term for what I practise and teach — encompassing movement, posture, breath, meditation, Qi cultivation and deeper internal work.

Qigong 氣功 broadly refers to practices concerned with cultivating and working with Qi through movement, posture, breathing, awareness and stillness.

Neigong 內功 means something closer to “internal work” or “internal skill” — developing the internal qualities and processes of the practitioner.

Neidan 內丹, or “Internal Alchemy”, goes deeper into Daoist traditions of internal transformation, with concepts such as Jing, Qi and Shen, the Dantian, the elixir, reversal and return.

These distinctions can be useful — but they aren’t three completely separate boxes.

A Qigong practice may contain Neigong principles. Neigong may involve movement, breathing and Qi cultivation we’d happily describe as Qigong. Neidan can incorporate meditation, breath and Qi circulation that overlap with both.

Interestingly, Qigong as the broad category we recognise today is relatively modern. The practices themselves are ancient and appeared throughout Chinese history under many different names — including Daoyin, Yangsheng, breathing practices, meditation, Qi cultivation and internal alchemy.

So I don’t get overly concerned with categorising every practice I do.

Partly because the lines are blurred.
Partly because different teachers and lineages use the terminology differently.
And partly because it can become another intellectual subject to squabble over online rather than actually practising.

My own practice contains elements that could comfortably sit within all three categories.

So for simplicity, I call what I practise Qigong.

The terminology can help us understand the map.

But ultimately, the practice is the important part.
