Match Report: Bank Quay Bulls 24–14 Runcorn Highfield ARLFC

It was a bruising, physical contest today as Bank Quay Bulls battled their way to a well-earned 24–14 victory over a tough Runcorn Highfield side. From the first whistle, both teams showed their intent in what proved to be a hard-fought encounter, with strong carries, big tackles, and relentless energy on both sides.

The Bulls opened their account through Marshall Hayes, who showed sharp awareness from dummy half. Spotting a gap close to the line, he sold a brilliant dummy five metres out before darting over to score. Hayes’ performance didn’t go unnoticed, earning recognition from the opposition in their man-of-the-match discussions.

Jayjay Catterall followed suit with a try of his own, again capitalising on quick thinking and strength. Throwing a clever dummy, he attacked the line with intent and battled his way through defenders to touch down. Catterall also added four successful conversions, proving crucial in building and maintaining the Bulls’ lead.

Continuing his impressive season, Niall Toher powered over from 10 metres out with a strong, determined run that underlined his form. His all-round performance earned him the opposition’s Man of the Match award, a testament to his impact on both sides of the ball.

One of the standout moments came from Jake Warburton, who read the play perfectly to intercept on the halfway line. With clear space ahead, he showed great pace and composure to race away and score. Warburton’s efforts saw him deservedly named Bank Quay Man of the Match.

Runcorn Highfield took a first half lead with 2 tries and never backed down, keeping the contest competitive throughout. However, the Bulls’ resilience and ability to capitalise on key moments ultimately made the difference.

A final mention goes to Jim Bird, who, along with Hayes, was highlighted by the opposition during their man-of-the-match deliberations—further recognition of the strong team performance on display.

Overall, it was a committed and physical showing from the Bulls, with standout individual performances complementing a solid team effort to secure the win.

Full Time: Bank Quay Bulls 18–24 Newton Storm Open Age 2026

Not the result we were hoping for today, falling to a narrow defeat. A moment of ill-discipline in the first half saw us reduced to 12 men for the remainder of the game, which made a tough contest even harder. There were also some questionable decisions from the referee throughout, affecting both sides.

Despite that, there were plenty of positives to take. Big performances across the field, with special mentions to our Man of the Matches:
1️⃣ Callum Cragg
2️⃣ Niall Toher
3️⃣ Billy Myers

All three put in outstanding shifts and led by example.

Credit to Newton Storm, with the overall Man of the Match going to Harvey Jordan.

We go again next time — building week by week. 🔵🔴
