Washington 5-2 Heddon

We've played some amazing football recently, and played some great stuff today but occasionally there will be games it doesn't quite flow like normal and today was maybe one of those where we didn't quite get to our best level, however effort and determination was there as always and that's all we ever ask for.

Goals for Lucy and Fletch were cancelled out after a spirited fight back from Heddon, taking us into half time at 2-2.

We just had to make sure we got those second half goals and put the game to bed rather than get caught out with a sucker punch and that's what we did.

Rae made it 3-2 with an ice cold finish. Then Fletch made it 4 after some hard graft by Ila to win possession. Mel nearly put a hole in the net to finish the tie and make sure we took the three points.

With their 4th game in 10 days, not including football commitments elsewhere, to still put the effort in we did to get the win was really pleasing. It was a warm morning too. Credit to them all.

Today's player of the match

The opposition came over to select Fletch as their player of the match. Could be every game to be fair. We know what Fletch brings but just when it seems like she gives you absolutely everything, she gives you even more the next week. Adding goals to her game too is making her an absolutely crucial player and we are a much better team when she is on the pitch.

Rae was coaches player today, an outstanding midfield display with some superb passing and a clinical finish for the third crucial goal. Adding physicality to her game is helping make Rae's all round game move up a level recently.

Killingworth Whites 3 - 3 Washington Lionesses

A proper away game that one...

1-0 down in a minute after the longest throw we've seen... We fought right back into the game, going in 1-1 at half time thanks to a great finish from Liv.

Second half was a really good battle, despite some frustration caused by the linesman's over enthusiastic flag... we managed to get into a 3-2 lead however conceded a late goal to finish the game 3-3.

Not an easy place to go and we definitely deserved something from the game, if not a win. We've certainly laid down a marker in our first two games to show that we will be right in the mix this season and teams will not look forward to playing us.

Yet again they should all be really happy with how they played, we had different players doing different jobs and sometimes we know they may not love the role they play but they do it and do it well, and that's what a proper team is.

As always they were all exceptional but it was difficult not to pick Fletch as POTM. In a game like that she's the exact type of player you want in your team, runs herself into the ground, contributes all over the pitch, wears her heart on her sleeve.

Well done girls, you should all be really happy with that tonight

Washington 8 - 1 Cramlington

Excellent performance today. We asked the girls to put down a marker to show all the other teams in the new league we've joined what we are about, and we certainly did that.

Cramlington were a good side who played with a lot of heart, we really enjoyed hosting them.

The way we are playing our football at the moment is particularly pleasing, always trying to play the right way, and when we do, teams will struggle to handle us.

There's no reason why we shouldn't be looking up all season in the league.

Parents should all be proud of each one of the girls, they are an amazing group,, I'm sure we are in for a really exciting season

Great session with GRAYS Football Coaching 💙

On Saturday we hosted our annual Washington Summer tournament.

It was a great morning with the girls playing some exceptional stuff. In the first four group games we never conceded a goal, getting three wins and a draw, followed by another 2-2 draw to conclude the group in second place.

We qualified for the champions cup and went a goal ahead in the semi final. Tournament football is brutal and we found ourselves unlucky to be level getting to the end of the game, where we were good value for our lead.

The game then went to the dreaded penalties. The team showed huge character with no shortage of hands going up to take penalties. It takes real bravery and our Lionesses lived up to their name. Unfortunately the lottery of penalties wasn't to be.

Whilst we didn't win the cup this year it was a fantastic outing from the girls where they really did leave it all out there, they should be very proud of themselves, they couldn't have done much more.

Congratulations to all of the award winners, both team and individual.

Yesterday at the tournament two of our girls were nominated for standout awards.

Fletch received numerous nominations for her attitude to the game and determination. There was a moment when the opposition were running and Fletch ran full belt from a forward position right back to our box just to get a tackle in and help the defence, which was the moment the referee shouted over that she should be up for an award. Having already been nominated, it made the decision even easier.

Fletch's attitude to the game is first class, she leaves everything on the pitch, does whatever job is asked of her and never complains. An absolute coaches dream.

Mel was nominated by one of the opposition teams who collectively voted for her. They said it was her work rate, composure and the way she controlled the game from CB. Yesterday she was absolutely unplayable and thoroughly deserved her award.

She has adapted to her new role amazingly well and is playing with enjoyment again, and it's a pleasure to watch.
