🏆 NORTHAMPTON FA COUNTY CUP 🏆

Queensway United 🆚 Harpole Iguanas

Queensway welcome Harpole Iguanas to our second home this Sunday! 🦁

Following another little clerical error 🤦‍♂️, Wollaston School have once again saved the day and opened their doors to the Pride. We may have made it our second home at this point! 😂

But enough about pitches… it’s time for football.

Harpole Iguanas are a strong side and will provide another tough test for Queensway. But this Pride is hungry. 🦁🔥

The search continues for that elusive first win of the season, and there’s no better time to go hunting than in the Northampton FA County Cup.

Expect a competitive game, plenty of passion and two teams determined to progress.

Let’s get behind the Pride and make some noise!

🦁 The Pride are still hunting.

POST MATCH REPORT

🌧️ WET WET WET… AND NO, STILL NO REFERENCE TO THE BAND!

Queensway 2–3 OG’s

Well, that was painful.

After a frantic game of “where the hell are we actually playing?”, we eventually found ourselves at Wollaston 4G, having been moved from Hatton at the last minute.

Because apparently organising a football match wasn’t stressful enough, we needed a pitch change thrown into the mix.

Then came the rain.

And more rain.

And then, just for good measure, some more rain.

Soaked doesn’t quite cover it. We were basically playing in a washing machine.

Thankfully, the Wollaston 4G pitch was absolutely class, meaning the weather was the only thing trying to ruin the morning.

Despite missing a few regulars, we actually started the game brilliantly.

We’d decided to experiment with a tight 4-2-3-1, which basically meant no wingers and absolutely no idea what we were doing.

Somehow, it worked.

In fact, we played some of the best football we’ve played in a Queensway shirt.

Quick passing, moving the ball around comfortably, finding space and, most importantly, occasionally looking like we knew what we were doing.

It was genuinely good stuff.

The game was proper end-to-end from the off, with both teams creating chances and neither side interested in doing anything as boring as sitting back.

OG’s eventually broke the deadlock with a well-worked goal, making the most of the space out wide.

Turns out giving the opposition the entire wing wasn’t part of the master plan.

Who knew?

But, as is traditional with Queensway, going behind suddenly activates our footballing abilities.

We responded quickly with a brilliant counter and new boy TJ popped up with a cracking goal to make it 1-1.

First goal for the club.

He’s probably wondering what he’s signed up for.

Then came PenaltyGate™.

OG’s were awarded not one, but TWO penalties.

One appeared to be for a challenge outside the area, while the second was given for a challenge so light that several players were probably surprised a foul had even been awarded.

Two penalties.

Two misses.

😂😂😂

Justice.

Karma.

Football gods.

Call it what you want.

We certainly weren’t complaining.

Actually, we were still complaining — just with significantly less urgency.

OG’s went back in front after the break to make it 2-1, but the game then descended into a little bit of Sunday League theatre.

One OG’s player received a dissent card after apparently asking the referee the highly scientific and entirely reasonable question:

“Who’s paying the ref?”

Now, we’re not saying that was the best way to speak to the official…

…but we admire the commitment to investigative journalism.

With them temporarily down to 10, we managed to create a few more chances and, once back to 11-a-side, eventually found the equaliser.

2-2.

Game on.

At this point, a draw felt about right.

Both teams had played well, both had chances and, despite the occasional penalty-related controversy, it had been a cracking game.

Surely we’d see out the final few minutes?

Surely?

Nope.

Because this is Queensway.

And why settle for a respectable point when you can instead gift the opposition a winner with the final kick of the game?

A mistake at the back right at the death allowed OG’s to nick it.

3-2.

Final kick.

Game over.

Soul destroyed.

Everyone standing around wondering how we’d managed to go from playing some of the best football we’ve ever played to throwing away a point at the exact moment the referee was probably reaching for his whistle.

Absolutely heartbreaking.

But credit where it’s due — OG’s were a great side and a great bunch, and they made us work for every minute of it.

The Wollaston 4G was brilliant, especially considering we were trying to play football while being repeatedly attacked by the entire contents of the sky.

The referee was decent overall too…

…although we’d like to formally request that next time penalties are actually inside the penalty area.

Just a thought.

And the weather?

Absolutely horrendous.

Wet wet wet.

No reference to the band.

Definitely not.

🧤 MAN OF THE MATCH — ZACK

A massive shout to Zack, who was excellent between the sticks.

He pulled off some really important saves and put in a proper shift in what was basically a football match conducted inside a raincloud.

Deserved Man of the Match.

👏🧤

So that’s another frustrating one.

Queensway 2–3 Wellingborough Old Grammarians Football Club

We scored two.

They scored three.

We missed out on a point.

They missed two penalties.

And somehow we’re still the ones going home miserable.

Football, eh?

Huge thanks to OG’s for a cracking game and good luck to them for the rest of the season. 👍

As for us…

We’ll regroup.

We’ll go again.

And hopefully next time, we’ll remember that the game doesn’t actually finish until the referee blows the whistle.
