Senior Match Reports - Saturday 6th June
Frustrating Draw for Norley Hall
Norley Hallβs first team had the better of the spoils in their top of the table clash away at Southport Trinity Cricket Club but, try as they might, they couldnβt quite secure a deserved victory.
Topping the table going into the match, the Green and Golds knew they were in for a tough test away at a team only a few points below them in a tight league table.
The hosts won the toss and chose to bowl first in bowler friendly damp conditions. This looked to be an inspired decision as Norley crashed to 1-2 with the quick loss of both opening batters Charlie Benson and Alex Martlew. Shah Afridi and Matthew Hayes then began the rebuild of the innings and took the score beyond 50 with some impressive batting. However, when first Afridi (40) and then Hayes (20) got out in quick succession to make the score 65-4, it triggered a batting collapse that saw Norley plummet to 86-6. However, as has happened a number of times already this season, the 2026 Green and Golds have a resilience that will stand them in good stead in difficult situations. Skipper Callam Hughes (64) and Liam Martlew (56) then put together a 7th wicket partnership of 119 as they thwarted the home team advances. After the loss of late wickets attempting to get to maximum batting points at 220, the Norley innings eventually ended on 213-9 declared in 55 overs.
In reply, the home team got off to a slow and steady start in the face of some tight bowling from Norley opening bowlers Ryan Wood and Callum Martlew. When a flurry of wickets were taken to make the score 41-4, then the home teams lack of intent to seriously attempt to chase the winning target (after winning the toss and choosing to bowl instead of bat) became even more obvious to those watching and it became more a question of whether Norley Hall could take the 10 required wickets for victory. This looked to be an affirmative no for a long time and wasnβt helped by costly dropped catches for the second week running. Well into the last 20 overs, home batters Liam Sherriff and Wim Van Der Walt looked to be in little trouble in batting out for a draw. However, when Hughes had Sherriff trapped leg before wicket and Benson had Van Der Walt caught behind by Hayes, it saw a flurry of wickets fall to make the score 109-8 having been 103-4 minutes before. The reintroduction of Woodβs extra pace saw him clean bowl the home teamβs number 10 batter to make the score 110-9. With just under 5 overs left of the dayβs play, it looked what had been an unlikely Norley victory just a few minutes before would happen.
However, the home teamβs last batting pair thwarted all attempts to seal a Norley Hall victory as the game finished on a draw with 8 bonus points to the Green and Golds and 5 points to the hosts. Wood took 3-43, Callum Martlew 2-27, Benson 2-6 and Hughes 2-4.
Despite not winning for three weeks now, Norley Hall remain top of a congested table going into their game against Fleetwood Hesketh next Saturday.
Back at City Road, the second team welcomed top of the table Northop Hall Cricket Club The visitors won the toss and chose to bowl. Norley opening batters Steve Atkinson and Colin Parrott got the Norley innings off to a steady start. When Atkinson was out for 17 with the score on 42, Parrott was joined by Martyn Caddick as the scoring rate increased. When Caddick was out for 22 (with the score 79-2) it saw a mini batting collapse as the score moved to 94-5. However, this was a far more resilient home team batting effort than in previous weeks as Andrew Magrath (16) and Mo Kapadia (20) led the contribution of the rest of the batting order as the home team innings ended on 145 all out in 52.3 overs. Parrott top scoring with 39.
In reply, with the absence of most pace bowling options, the Green and Gold bowling effort was opened up by Aston Bailey and Kapadia. A spirited home team bowling effort was not always backed up in the field with a number of dropped catches. However, the visitors were made to work hard for their win with only a few overs of the days play left when they secured the win β Northop Hall finishing on 146-3 in 36.1 overs. There was one wicket for Kapadia, one for Parrott and one for home team skipper Keiron Ashcroft.
This was positive performance from the team and one they can take confidence from and hopefully build on in the coming weeks.
The second team should have been back in action on the Sunday in a cup quarter final away at Caldy but the home team conceded the game. This sees Norleyβs second team progress to the semi final.
