Little Dragons + the big kids! 🐉🥋

One of my favourite things about the holiday sessions is giving the Little Dragons a chance to share the mats with some of the older students.

They get to watch, copy, practise and learn from them - although, judging by Sunday’s session, the Little Dragons are quite capable of keeping the bigger ones on their toes too! 😂

Lots of smiles, lots of confidence and some lovely training.

Well done, Dragons! 💛

One question I’m occasionally asked is:

“Is once a week enough?”

For the vast majority of children (and adults)… absolutely.

Would someone training twice a week progress a little faster? Of course. Three times a week faster still.

But martial arts is only one part of life.

Children have swimming, football, dance, music, Cubs, birthdays, school commitments and, most importantly, family time. Adults have work, families and countless other responsibilities.

That’s why at Wi******er School of Martial Arts the standard membership starts with Bronze, based on attending once a week. If you have the time and want to train more, there are Silver (twice weekly) and Gold (three or more sessions) options.

My aim has never been to make families feel they have to train multiple times a week. I’d much rather see someone attend consistently once a week, enjoy every lesson and make steady progress than feel under pressure to attend more often than life realistically allows.

After all, martial arts is a journey, not a race. Personal progress is what matters most.

Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, teacher or coach, it’s natural to want to protect children from disappointment and help them succeed. It can be tempting to step in when things get difficult, but some of the biggest lessons come from learning to try again.

As both a former teacher and martial arts instructor, I’ve written a blog about why learning to fail safely is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children.

I hope you enjoy the read.

Anyone who cares about children wants to see them grow into confident, resilient young people.

Why should the kids have all the fun? 😄🥋

My Little Dragons had some very special training partners today as mums, dads and even a nan joined them on the mats at the end of the session!

There were plenty of smiles, lots of laughter, and a few adults who discovered that martial arts is great fun! 😂

These moments are about more than learning techniques. They’re about building confidence, making memories, and sharing something special together.

Thank you to everyone who got involved - you were brilliant! ❤️

My Little Dragons continue to impress me every week! 🐉

This week they practised striking skills before exploring age-appropriate Bullies & Defenders exercises, helping them build confidence, listening skills and body awareness in a safe and positive environment.

It’s amazing how much these young students grow - not just physically, but in confidence and self-belief too.

Well done everyone!

🐉 Little Dragons (3-6)

Little steps lead to big achievements. 🐉

My youngest students may be small, but every lesson helps them grow.

Learning to listen, follow instructions, take turns, try again after mistakes and celebrate success are all important life skills that develop alongside their martial arts.

Well done to all of my Little Dragons for your fantastic effort recently, especially during the warmer weather. Keep up the great work - I’m proud of every one of you! 🥋

🐉 Little Dragons in action! 🐉

Another fantastic session with my youngest martial artists today. Plenty of smiles, lots of focus and some brilliant teamwork as they practised striking, pad work and simple groundwork together.

The new Little Dragons uniforms are looking amazing too! 💙💛 They really bring the team together, and it’s wonderful seeing them worn with such pride.

My Little Dragons classes are about far more than simply keeping children busy. Every lesson is built around real, age-appropriate martial arts, carefully adapted for 3 - 6 year olds. While confidence, balance, coordination and listening skills all develop naturally along the way, they’re learning genuine martial arts techniques from the very beginning.

I believe children deserve more than games with the occasional martial arts movement mixed in. They deserve structured, progressive tuition that is fun, engaging and appropriate for their age - while still being authentic martial arts.

Fantastic effort from everyone today. I’m incredibly proud of how well you’re all progressing! 🥋🐲
