Matched my clean PB 🤙🏽
-
I haven’t been lifting all that heavy of recent but have been doing an awful lot of accessory work.
goes to show that that the single leg isolation and strength accessory sessions are paying off. 125kg going up and feeling like a dream, if only I had longer than 6 minutes!

❓What is Fitness❓
-
This photo was taken a couple of days after Christmas. As you can see, I have no visible abs, I’m not shredded and am fashioning what most people would describe as a “dad bod”
-
Bottom line is, if you don’t enjoy Christmas then you’re simply not doing it right! But some people would deem it unacceptable to be in this condition as a personal trainer because I don’t have a six pack and you can’t grate cheese on my abs...
-
Mainly because of instagram, physique competitors and influences with thousands of followers that get paid a wedge to endorse naff products like boom bod and herbalife, the public have developed a huge misconception surrounding “what it is to be fit”
-
No disrespect to physique competitors as I have admiration for what they do and there is a lot of dedication to the processes they have in place. But what people lack to understand is that the condition they are on stage is achieved through weeks of caloric deficits, countless cardio sessions and repetitive eating and in actual fact, isn’t a healthy or sustainable condition.
-
If you train regularly but sink pints and scoff pizza at the weekends, fine.
If you’re into dancing and thats your way to stay fit, fine.
If you’re not into competing in competitions and just train to be a bit healthier, fine.
If you never set foot in a gym and do all your training outdoors, fine.
DO YOU! There is no right or wrong!
-
Granted, I don’t currently look like this now but it isn’t a problem to look like this at certain points of the year... I love the industry that I work in but this is an issue that has gone on for a while and is frankly becoming worse.
-
◾️It’s ok to carry a little bit more body fat than other people
◾️ stop giving a f**k about squat b***y Stacey on Instagram and do what you enjoy
◾️If you slip up a little bit along the way it’s not the end of the world.
◾️ A SIX PACK ISN’T THE EPITOME OF HEALTH!
-
This isn’t being posted with the intention of receiving gratification from others because I posted a photo of me looking a bit s**t. I’m not fussed about what people think and they’re entitled to their opinion. But Instead to do what you enjoy!

Not the prettiest but here’s a little complex of
1 push press, 1 push jerk, 1 split jerk at 100kg.
-
With the purpose on maintaining the position of the trunk during each movement and continuing to drop under the bar without any major pelvic tilt.
Split jerk begins to feel heavy after the first two movements too!

🔥CLIENT SHOUT OUT!🔥
-
We’d like to acknowledge our client @penny_thorpe for her hard work and dedication to changing her lifestyle and improving her health!
-
Penny has been a member with us since March and has followed her programming and nutrition coaching religiously! As you can see from her progress picture, her commitment has paid off!
-
From training 4 times per week, tracking her food and making small lifestyle changes, Penny has increased her deadlift PB by 5 kilos to 87.5kg and her back squat to 72.5kg. She has also managed to improve her pull ups and has dropped a significant amount of body fat!
-
“I literally haven’t been on holiday in the last 10 years where I haven’t felt self conscious. Literally feel so different, strong and content. Literally couldn’t have done it without you”
-
We are so proud of penny and the progress she has made, she is only going to improve further!

Moving under fatigue 💨
-
There should be purpose to everything you do in your training. Your movement patterns, your training focus, your tempo etc.
-
Here, this complex of 2 front squats and 1 split jerk at 90% of 1rm C+J simulates the fatigue in your legs after catching a significantly heavier clean and having to still dip drive the legs with force to receive the jerk.
-
It isn’t just weightlifting where this principle can be applied. If you struggle with pull ups under fatigue, perform max pull ups after a 250m row. If you struggle with shoulder endurance in handstand push ups, perform max handstand push ups after 10 overhead squats.
-
Rethink the ways you train and the ways you can improve under fatigue.

🔔205kg deadlift PB🔔
-
Having not tested my deadlift 1RM since January 2018, it was about time that we revisited the lift and I’m chuffed to have added 5kg to my PB.
-
In my programming, I haven’t drilled above 90% of my 1RM but have been focussing on volume across different percentages. Things that we focus on in our programming in @thefunctionalfitnessacademy
-
Stronger deadlifts have significant benefits to your health and improving your training such as a more injury resistant back, a stronger core, bigger glutes and not failing to mention that they’re the pinnacle of functional movement!

| Health Vs Aesthetics |
-
Last week, I took a well earned week off from work, from training, from tracking my food and basically spent the entire week horizontal on a sun lounger in beautiful Turkey 🇹🇷
-
I absolutely love being a coach and helping people improve their quality of living, create on going habits and better their health. But with that comes 15 hour working days, 7 day work weeks and limited time spent with my partner, so the week away together was very much needed!
-
I am an advocate for good health and as I say to my clients, I strongly believe in training with a mentality towards good health as opposed to solely training for the way your body looks.
For me, good health comprises of being strong, fit, getting good quality sleep, good nutrition, adequate recovery and positive mental health.
-
Now I could be 6% body fat if I really wanted to and I have been there in the past, but I don’t enjoy it. I have a great social life with my girlfriend, my family and my friends. I am not restricted in the foods that I eat and never feel like I’m sacrificing anything. Ultimately, I am currently the fittest and strongest I’ve ever been, I haven’t been sick in over 3 years and most importantly, I love my life!
-
Vanity will always be a reason for why we train, but the public are currently subject to a flaw in the industry of “the perfect body” which has made a lot of people, including myself a few years back, very body image conscious when there is no need to be.
-
Having a healthy amount of body fat is fine, not having rock hard abs is fine, having the odd naughty meal at the weekend is fine!
-
Very big post here I know, but STRIVE FOR HEALTH, NOT AESTHETICS. If you work towards good health, the body composition will improve with it!
-
Have a great day people!

Knowing that I don’t pull enough in my sn**ch, I did a little complex of every 2 minutes for 20 minutes:
.
1 sn**ch pull, 1 sn**ch
.
Focusing on technique and the quality of my movement whilst still trying to hit decent percentages! I will get good at sn**ch one day!

Why Weight Watchers Doesn't work

06/05/2019

My final set of 5 deadlifts at 160kg after completing the first part of “batman” hero WOD:
.
All whilst wearing a 10kg weighted vest.
.
Buy in - 100 air squats
.
50-40-30-20-10
Box jumps
Wallballs
KB swings
.
Buy out - 4x5 deadlifts at 80% of 1RM
.
Absolutely horrible workout to complete but there is always a motive to why we do hero WOD’s.
The armed forces put their lives on the line for us and putting ourselves through an hour of pain and grit is a very small price to pay and how we pay our respect those who have fallen fighting to serve and protect their country.
.
Andrew Doiron was only 31 years old when he was KIA serving in Iraq!

🎯The sweet spot in your training🎯
.
Often, we overlook the simplicities in our training and strive for complexity.
Chasing the big numbers in lifts, aspiring to be like “influencers” we see on social media and disregard building foundations and performing fundamental movements.
.
Strength, technique and mobility must be equal in order to improve!
.
🏋🏽‍♂️ Strength -
The obvious reasons here being it’s better to be strong than it is to be weak. But improving strength also increases bone density, reduces the risk of osteoporosis and not failing to mention increases muscle mass.
Lifting heavy s**t is cool too!
.
🥇 Technique -
All are equally as important but without good technique, strength and mobility are wasted. Technique ensures that proper mechanics are maintained through any movement. And by maintaining proper mechanics, we ensure that the muscles are firing correctly which means optimal engagement. You also run a lower risk of injury.
.
🤸🏽‍♂️Mobility -
Stretching and mobilising is the least sexy thing in the world. No one looks at the guy foam rolling and think “That looks cool!” But being mobile is vital, not only for your training but also for later in life.
Without adequate mobility, you wouldn’t be able to get into the bottom position of your squat or fully extend your arms above head. There’s no point in being strong with good technique if we aren’t mobile enough to get in the correct positions.
.
🎯THE SWEET SPOT
.
Strive for the middle point in the picture. Being strong, mobile and having great technique. This sweet spot is what will give greater level of improvement across all areas of training.
.
Train for purpose!
.
