Woodbridge Town win 5–4 on penalties 🏆

Woodbridge Town U18s welcomed Mulbarton Wanderers U18s to the Homestyle UK Ground for the FA Youth Cup First Round Qualifying, with revenge firmly on the agenda.

Mulbarton were the side that ended Woodbridge’s Youth Cup journey at this stage last season, so there was plenty of motivation for the young Peckers to put things right and book their place in the next round.

The lads also donned their brand-new kit, proudly sponsored by Seckford Hall, for the first time.

Harman returned to the squad following suspension but unfortunately picked up a knock and had to drop out of the starting XI, with Margetts coming into the side. Otherwise, the squad remained largely unchanged from recent games.

First half:

The visitors started brightly and it took just three minutes for Mulbarton to take the lead.

A defensive mix-up at the back presented the Mulbarton forward with an empty net, and he made no mistake from close range to make it 0–1.

The early goal didn’t quite have the desired effect on Woodbridge, with Mulbarton enjoying plenty of possession and putting the hosts under pressure.

On 11 minutes, Jacobs’ corner was swung into the box and cleared for another corner. The second delivery caused a goalmouth scramble, but nobody in black & white could find the finishing touch.

Woodbridge continued to struggle for rhythm as Mulbarton controlled large spells of the first half, with the hosts occasionally sloppy in possession.

Just as it looked like Woodbridge would head into the break only one goal behind, another defensive error allowed Mulbarton to capitalise. The forward spotting Wilding off his line and produced a clever lob that found the back of the net to make it 0–2.

The referee soon brought an end to the first half.

Second half

Woodbridge came out with renewed intent after the break.

Five minutes into the half, Clarke showed some excellent footwork before delivering a dangerous ball into the box, but nobody could get on the end of it.

On 53 minutes, Nevard and Kelly replaced Metcalfe and Margetts as Woodbridge looked to change the momentum of the game.

Just three minutes later, Thompson was hauled to the ground on the edge of the Mulbarton box, presenting Woodbridge with a dangerous free kick.

Thompson stepped up and delivered with aplomb, finding the back of the net and bringing Woodbridge right back into the contest at 1–2.

The visitors almost restored their two-goal advantage shortly afterwards when a looping header looked destined for the top corner, only for Wilding to produce a fantastic save to keep his side in the game.

Barber replaced Grace, before Leys came on for Clarke as Woodbridge continued to push for an equaliser.

As the clock ticked towards 90 minutes, Leys was on the receiving end of a very late and high challenge. Despite the nature of the tackle, the referee opted for a yellow card, with Leys thankfully able to continue.

Then, six minutes later, the moment Woodbridge had been waiting for.

After plenty of pressure and a whole lot of huffing and puffing, the equaliser finally arrived.

Jacobs was fouled following another late challenge out on the right. Gotts stepping up and delivering a perfect cross into the box, which Thompson met and guided into the path of Page, who made no mistake from close range.

2–2.

A hugely deserved equaliser and one that arrived right at the death.

With both sides having opportunities during the remaining moments, the referee eventually brought proceedings to an end and the tie headed to penalties.

Penalty shootout:

The nerves were jangling, but Woodbridge held their nerve.

Jacobs, Page, Wilding & Nevard all finishing their penalties.

With Wilding making crucial saves along the way, it was left to Gotts to fire home the decisive penalty and spark jubilant scenes at the Homestyle UK Ground.

Woodbridge Town win 5–4 on penalties! 🎉

A dramatic comeback, a penalty shootout victory and, most importantly, revenge for last season’s defeat.

The U18s are into the next round of the FA Youth Cup. 🔥

⭐ Player of the Match: Skipper, Hunt.

A composed and influential performance from the captain as he helped lead the lads through a difficult evening and ultimately into the next round.

Match Report:
Needham Market 0–1 Woodbridge Town U18s

Woodbridge Town U18s travelled to Needham Market off the back of knocking Bury Town out of the FA Youth Cup, looking to continue their strong start to the season.

They knew they faced a tough test against a usually very good and well-conditioned Needham Market side.

Woodbridge made a couple of changes to the starting XI, with Brown missing through injury and Grace and Jacobs dropping to the bench. Clarke and Nicholson coming into the side.

Needham got the game underway and the early signs were of home dominance, with Woodbridge under plenty of pressure.

The defence stood firm, defending extremely well as Needham continued to come forward.

On 12 minutes, Needham struck the post, with the attacker driving a low effort towards the far corner, only for it to cannon back off the post and be cleared to safety.

Minutes later, a deep free kick from Hillebrandt was cleared by Needham, with Thompson catching an accidental elbow to the face. After receiving treatment from the physio, he was unable to continue whilst bleeding heavily, with De Vere Packford coming on in his place.

Needham then had a one-on-one opportunity, but a last-ditch tackle from Page halted the attack. Minutes later, the Needham forward was again played in behind, only for Page to make another excellent tackle to stop the danger.

Wilding was also called into action on a couple of occasions as Needham continued to push for an opener.

Barber then misplaced a pass which inadvertently played the Needham striker through, but Hillebrandt came across brilliantly to stop the attack.

Needham’s attacking pressure was relentless, with the Woodbridge defence holding strong. The ball not sticking up front, resulting in further pressure on the back four & Hint

Despite the continued Needham pressure, the half-time whistle eventually came with the scores level at 0–0.

Not the prettiest half to watch, but some excellent defending & saves from Wilding, keeping Woodbridge in the game.

Woodbridge made two changes at half-time, with Grace and Jacobs introduced for Clarke and Nicholson.

The second half started much differently, with Woodbridge coming out of the traps quickly and taking the game to Needham.

The Woodpeckers began linking up the play much better and started to push Needham onto the back foot, with signs that the momentum had swung in Woodbridge’s favour.

On 60 minutes, Nevard replacing Margetts.

Minutes later, Needham came forward once again, but the ball was cleared into the path of Thompson. He turned his man before playing Clarke in, with Clarke returning the pass to Thompson, who narrowly fired wide.

Kelly then replaced Metcalfe.

Ten minutes later, some excellent determination from Clarke saw him chase down a loose ball after it had been cleared deep into the Needham half, earning Woodbridge a corner.

And from the resulting corner, Woodbridge took the lead.

Gotts delivering an excellent inswinging corner, which was met by Thompson, who powered his header home to give the Woodpeckers the lead.

Needham immediately went back onto the attack for the remainder of the game, piling forward and delivering cross after cross and corner after corner, searching for that equaliser.

The Woodbridge defence, however, stood strong, clearing everything that came their way.

Wilding was called into action again, while Gotts also made a couple of important tackles to stop Needham attacks.

Woodbridge continued to win the ball back and drive forward when opportunities presented themselves, while also doing a good job of keeping possession and relieving the pressure.

Kelly worked hard following some lovely link-up play with Thompson, while Jacobs and the rest of the defence continued to defend strongly whenever called upon.

As the game entered its closing stages, Needham were largely restricted to a handful of long-range efforts, with most ending high and wide.

The referee eventually brought the game to a close, confirming a 1–0 victory for Woodbridge Town U18s after a much-improved second-half performance.

A huge defensive effort, a well-taken goal and another important three points for the Woodpeckers.
