Does getting out of bed feel stiffer than it used to? Your back, hips or shoulders constantly ni**le at you?

Have you accepted this as just part of getting older?

Most pain I see in midlife clients isn’t caused by age. It’s caused by how the body has adapted over time:
– old injuries never fully resolved
– stress and tension over the years
– loss off good movement patterns

Your body is compensating and these compensations are contributing to pain.

The good news is compensation can be undone.

Imagine being able to move without fear.
Walking, exercising, travelling, or simply living your day without constantly fearing pain.

That’s what happens when we stop blaming age and start restoring good movement back into your body. That’s what I help you do.

We identify your compensation patterns and you develop better awareness on how you move. I take you through exercises safely and progress you appropriately.

You don’t have to accept decline for ‘that’s just part of ageing’ what you need is the right support and a smarter approach.

If you’re ready to move better, book a free discovery call and let’s talk about what’s really going on in your body and what would help.

Why Your Exercises Aren’t Working: Chronic Pain Solutions — SQ Active - Body and Mind 03/09/2026

Why Your Exercises Aren’t Working: Chronic Pain Solutions

Why What You’re Doing Isn’t Working: The Key to Healing Chronic Injuries
Many clients come to me frustrated. They describe a long list of stretches and exercises they’ve been prescribed, but they report little to no improvement — and sometimes, they even feel worse.

When they take me through what they’ve been given, I can usually see why these exercises were prescribed. It’s not that they’re “wrong.” More often than not, the problem lies in:

• The wrong level – exercises are too hard or too easy.

• Poor explanation – not fully understanding how or why to perform them.

• Wrong timing – exercises given too early or too late in the healing process.

Are you making little progress with the exercises you've been given?

Why Exercise Should Never End | SQ Active — SQ Active - Body and Mind 27/08/2026

Why Exercise Should Never End

One of the most common questions I hear after someone starts to feel better is:
“How long do I have to keep doing this for?”

It’s an understandable question. When you’ve been doing specific rehab exercises to get out of pain, it’s tempting to think of them as temporary — something to “fix” the problem so you can get back to normal life.

But in all honesty, movement isn’t medicine you take until you’re better, it’s part of staying well.

When clients come to see me with pain, the root cause is often lack of movement and muscle atrophy. In simple terms, the muscles that were once doing their job have weakened from disuse. The solution is to rebuild strength and reintroduce movement in a targeted way — that’s where rehab and corrective exercise come in.

But once those muscles are working again, stopping altogether means you slowly return to where you started. No movement → muscle atrophy → weakness → pain. It’s a predictable cycle.

So when people ask, “How long do I need to keep doing this?” my honest answer is:
Forever.

That doesn’t mean you have to keep doing the same exercises every day for the rest of your life - but it does mean you need to keep moving, challenging your muscles, and staying active in some form.

Think of it like brushing your teeth. You don’t stop brushing just because you haven’t had a cavity in a while - you keep brushing to prevent problems. Movement works the same way.

Why Exercise Should Never End | SQ Active — SQ Active - Body and Mind Exercise isn’t a short-term fix — it’s a lifelong habit. Discover why keeping your body moving is key to staying strong, pain-free, and healthy for life.

Is Avoiding Painful Movements Making Things Worse? — SQ Active - Body and Mind 20/08/2026

The Problem With Avoidance

Your body adapts to whatever you repeatedly do.

If you move regularly, it adapts to movement. If you avoid movement, it adapts to restriction.

When you stop using a movement because it hurts, a few things will start to happen:

Muscles become weaker because they’re not being challenged.

Joints stiffen because you’re no longer taking them through their full range of movement.

The nervous system becomes more protective and sensitive.

You lose confidence in your ability to move safely.

Would you like help learning how to move safely again?

Is Avoiding Painful Movements Making Things Worse? — SQ Active - Body and Mind It’s completely understandable to avoid movements that hurt - something hurts, so you stop doing it. But how long should you avoid said movement for? For example: you bend down once, your back twinges, and suddenly you’re avoiding tying your shoelaces properly. Your knee complains on the stairs,...

16/08/2026

“Maybe this is just what getting older feels like?”
Ever had that thought?

Your back aches after a walk. Your knees complain when you bend down.
You’ve started avoiding the things you used to love—because pain always joins in.

It’s easy to think: “This must just be ageing.”
But here’s the truth 👉 Pain isn’t an inevitable part of getting older.
It’s a sign that something needs attention. And it can be changed.

I work with midlifers who want to stay active, strong and independent—but feel like their body is holding them back.

Using a mix of:
** Soft tissue therapy
** Movement coaching
** Gentle, tailored exercise

We find your starting point, and build from there.
No pushing through. No “just get on with it.”

Just a whole-body approach that helps you move better and feel better.
Ageing doesn’t have to mean giving up the things you love.
You deserve to feel confident in your body—at any age.

Many people are surprised to learn that everyday habits - sitting too long at a desk, poor posture, or repetitive movements - can create muscular imbalances. Over time, these imbalances place uneven pressure on the spine, which can contribute to herniated or bulging discs.

A bulging disc happens when the soft cushion (disc) between the bones of your spine pushes out of its normal place. This is common in two areas:

** Cervical spine (neck) – where it can cause pain, tingling, or weakness in the shoulders, arms, and hands.
** Lumbar spine (lower back) – where it can lead to pain or numbness in the buttocks, legs, or feet.

Because the spinal discs sit so close to your nerves, even a small bulge can press on them, creating sharp pain, weakness, or that all-too-familiar “pins and needles” sensation.

If you are suffering as a result of sitting too long, soft tissue therapy can help to rebalance your muscle relieving the tension on your spine. Drop me a line to book a treatment. Treatments £65 take place in my home treatment room in Worcester Park.

The biggest mistake I see people make when trying to get rid of back pain.

They stop moving.

It makes sense. If something hurts, your instinct is to protect it.

So you avoid bending down. You stop exercising. You rest more. You become cautious with every movement.

The problem?

The less you move, the weaker and stiffer your body becomes. Before long, simple things like getting out of a chair, picking something up from the floor or walking for any distance become harder than they need to be.

In many cases, the answer isn't to stop moving. It's to move better.

That's why I don't just focus on relieving your pain. I help you understand what's causing it, improve the way you move, and build the strength and confidence to get back to living your life.

If back pain is stopping you from doing the things you enjoy, book a discovery call and let's discuss the best way to get you moving again.

I recently worked with a client who complained of a stiff back, upon assessing him - I noticed firstly he wasn't engaging his core effectively when moving. Secondly, he wasn't distributing his weight equally - most of his weight was on his left side.

As he engages in many sports that involve rotation, such as golf and tennis - it's even more important that he learns to better engage his core.

Our work has increased his awareness of how he uses his body alongside how he stands and distributes his weight and how he bends forward.

Learning to bend without using his back was his gamechanger. He said it was completely different and in a good way.

He went from coming in feeling extremely stiff, to leaving much looser and more flexible just through learning to move differently.

You don't stop moving because you're getting older. You get older because you stop moving.

Age isn't always what takes away our strength. Often, it's the gradual loss of movement over time.

It starts with little decisions.

- Taking the lift instead of the stairs.
- Driving to the local shop instead of walking.
- Avoiding getting down on the floor because you're worried you won't get back up.
- Holding onto the handrail for every step.
- Or choosing a stair lift when, with the right support and guidance, your legs are still capable of doing the job.

The less we ask of our muscles, the weaker they become. The weaker they become, the harder everyday tasks feel. Before long, we've convinced ourselves that it's "just old age."

It doesn't have to be that way.

Your body is designed to move. With the right approach, you can improve your strength, balance and confidence at almost any age, helping you stay independent and keep doing the things you love for longer.

If you've started avoiding activities because you're worried about pain or feeling unsteady, let's talk.

Book a discovery call and together we'll create a plan to help you move with confidence again.
