One of the reasons I stayed working longer abroad (than I had planned...) 🌍

..was because I was unsure how a career would look back at home 🤔

I enjoy researching the world of work...🔬

.. a few weeks ago I looked into expats and their careers.

I was interested to see how their careers influence their attitudes towards repatriating.

I found that:

👉 72.5% shared the concerns that I had...repatriating and meeting career expectations is a challenge.

I could certainly understand where these concerns came from.

Can anyone relate? 💭

Inspired by one of my favourite books... ✍

.."The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" 💥

Here are the "Career Circles of Influence!" 💼

For those who are not familiar with these circles, the concept is to influence what you can control and make that circle as big as possible

There are a lot of non-controllable factors impacting on careers in the VUCA world of today...🌎

However, adapting can ensure that we tilt the scales in our favour...

to help ensure we establish meaningful careers and meaningful work! 🔥

Are there any other aspects you could suggest for either circle? 💭

What do you think are some career challenges of repatriating back home? 🌍 🛩

Our recent research of almost 150 ex-pats found that over 3/4 found the process challenging ❌

From my own experience, I was anxious about how I could continue to take career steps forward (as opposed to backwards).

It took a lot of research, networking and asking others to set up a framework that would help...ensure success! 🔥

Do you face similar concerns? 🤔

Today is World Children's Day! 🌟

For professionals working as expats...they often have conflicted feelings about bringing up their children abroad 🤔

However, similar to adults...there are key skills developed from living abroad 🔥

👉 1. Cultural Competence and Adaptability

Children who grew up abroad were found to have a deeper understanding and appreciation of diversity as adults. This is certainly an important career skill that leaders are required to have in today's society.

👉 2. Resilience and Independence

Children who are regularly required to adapt to new environments have been found in research to have increased levels of resilience. Adults who have lived as an expat during their childhood are often considered more self-dependent which is a further skill required in leadership positions.

👉 3. Communication Skills

Expat children are often faced with the challenge of communicating in different ways due to language differences. This can help make them better all-round communicators who are more perceptive to aspects such as body language and emotions. These heightened levels of communication can certainly help them as expat leaders.

What skills do you think expat children and adults develop from their experience?

What did we learn about supporting wellbeing during the pandemic in China?

Support is much needed!

And, "a lot" of support is what is needed.

Organisations providing "some support" may as well provide "none at all."
