Martin Cooper, a Motorola engineer, is credited with inventing the first mobile phone, making the first call from a hand-held device in New York City on April 3, 1973. His prototype, the DynaTAC, was the predecessor to the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, the first commercially available cell phone, launched in 1984.
