Learning from each other and learning by doing isthe best way of learning. This week it is 10 years since the second batch of students and teachers from Ghana visited their counterparts in Norway. We will share some highlights this comming week. It was freezing cold but the memories are warm. Here at the schoolgarden at Byåsen skole, planting a tree for long standing friendship and learning about how the resilient potatos help saved the people in the hight north from starving during har times. We experienced it the hard way, as it was snow in the air while we were planting, although summer season had started 😳❄️.

When Ghana gained independence 69 years ago, we had a largely green economy and healthy natural environments. As we move toward Ghana@70, let us work together to restore that legacy and reduce our dependence on pollutants. For the sake of our children and the generations to come.

2025 gave us important break troughs. Years with methodological developments for the Ghanaian context is paying off. Learn more in the Center for Sustainable Transformation - CEST end of year bews letter (first comment) on what has been achieved and development strategies for 2026. Wishing you all a Happy new year 🪅
At Labadi Beach last week, during the «outdoor classrom day» of the Plastic Free School program, our students were introduced to a fisherman who has worked these waters since the 1970s. With the help of a Kinbu student translating between Ga and English, he told us how things have changed.
Ten years ago, he said, a few hours of fishing early in the morning would fill his basket. That day, after fishing since 3 a.m., his catch was small. When asked why, his answer was simple: the rubbish is scaring the fish away.
Sitting between the lagoon and the ocean, in the heart of Accra’s tourist area, he explained that the sea is no longer a livable place for the fish — and that this is affecting his livelihood.
For our students, this moment connected plastic waste, ocean health, and human lives in a way no classroom lesson ever could.

At our Outdoor Classroom session of the Plastic-Free Schools project, we conducted a simple citizen science exercise with the students. Their task was to identify the types of plastic waste that had ended up on the beach, count the quantities within each fraction, and then reflect on what they found and why.
This led to good discussions about how items with economic value—like plastic bottles and sachet-water bags—are less common on the beach, while plastics with no value and no take-back system, such as styrofoam from takeaway food, are found everywhere.
The highlight was when one of the girls summed up the activity by saying, “We need better policies.”
What do you think are the solutions? Are policy developments enough?

This is promising:
President John Dramani Mahama has announced a transformative initiative that will see all secondary schools and tertiary institutions in Ghana establish their own school farms.
Speaking at the 2025 Farmers' Day celebration, the President revealed plans to integrate agriculture into the educational system, ensuring students gain practical farming skills while contributing to national food production.
