Every leader plays roles they were never trained for.
Some days I am the strategist. Other days, I am formatting a proposal at 11pm, drafting a follow-up email, researching a topic, or pulling together a presentation—because there is simply no one else to hand it to.
If you lead a small team, run a business, or wear more hats than your job title suggests, you probably know this reality.
You start with the strategic work—the work only you can do. Then the whatsapp messages or emails come. The research. The reports. The presentations. The repetitive tasks. And before you realise it, the work that matters most gets pushed to the end of the day.
This year, I decided to intentionally incorporate AI into how we work at VR Corporate Consult. Recently, I have taken it a step further by learning how to maximize tools like ChatGPT and Claude.
I am beginning to see AI differently. AI can become the support staff you cannot yet afford to hire. It can help me:
• Get a first draft instead of starting from a blank page
• Research and summarise information faster
• Structure presentations and proposals
• Brainstorm and challenge my thinking
• Handle repetitive tasks that consume valuable time
But AI does not replace my judgment. It gives me more time to use it. That distinction matters. Relegate the repetitive. Keep the strategic.
What is one task you would gladly hand over to AI today?
