Tonight, an intriguing aquatic insect was discovered in Spring-Lake Truba, and based on its appearance and known distribution, we estimate with approximately 90% confidence that it is Lethocerus niloticus, one of Africa’s giant water bugs. The specimen displays the characteristic broad, flattened brown body, powerful swimming legs, raptorial forelegs adapted for capturing prey, and a long respiratory siphon extending from the rear of the abdomen. These features are consistent with the genus Lethocerus and strongly support its identification as L. niloticus, although definitive species-level confirmation would require closer examination of diagnostic anatomical features.

Giant water bugs are formidable freshwater predators. They ambush and capture aquatic insects, tadpoles, frogs, small fish, and other aquatic animals, injecting digestive enzymes before consuming their liquefied tissues. Adults can also fly, and their attraction to artificial lights may explain why this individual was encountered at night around our boathouse. The specimen also appeared to be missing one leg, perhaps the result of an earlier encounter with a predator, competitor, or accident.

Its presence is an encouraging observation for spring-lake Truba’s biodiversity, indicating that the lake supports a complex food web.

In building a walkway over spring-lake Truba that is shaped like the number 7 requires engineering that is not overcome by the fear of heights.
