Amazing interschool finals day!!
Three days of unbelievable hockey came to an end yesterday in an afternoon packed with elation, excitement, laughter, tears and despair.
The girls’ tournament had this year taken the format of a round robin.
Clear winners after day two were Bishop Fitzgerald who didn’t concede a single goal throughout the entire competition - fantastic!
Loreto Convent pushed St Joseph’s into third spot by just the one point!
The matches played on Monday hadn’t given any clear leader so it had been all to play for yesterday. Some great individual skills, excellent team work and sheer grit and determination made this a wonderful competition. Well done to the girls 👏👏👏
The boys’ playoffs started with a bang - St Joseph’s and St Anne’s had to battle it out at the start of the afternoon just to determine the semi final line up!
The semi finals were nail biting to say the least. St Joseph’s were beaten by Loreto Convent in a penalty shootout that went on to a sudden death shootout.
Bishop Fitzgerald, in the other semi, went 0-1 down to St Anne’s before successfully securing a win.
St Joseph’s and St Anne’s then met again for the third and fourth playoff - St Joseph’s victorious here once again.
The semis had set the scene - the final was not going to disappoint. Loreto Convent v Bishop Fitzgerald. 1-0 to Loreto but with 30 seconds left on the clock Bishop equalised!
The penalty shootout that followed was all square after three penalties. It all went down to a sudden death shootout (again!) in which Loreto managed to secure their first ever win in interschool hockey!
Full credit to the teams who came lower than third place - true passion was evident throughout and all players can, and should be, truly proud of their performance.
All in all a great few days of hockey and thanks must be given to the GSLA, the umpires and time keepers.
A special thanks to our Mayor, John Goncalves & our president Diana Soussi for presenting all the medals and trophies (of which there were a lot!)
A big thank you to all the children who took part and made this tournament what it was - more than special ❤️💙🏑
But especially a big thank you to Chrissie Caetano for all her hard work 😘
Until next year ...

Wow! Interschool drama yesterday on the pitch!
It was the day for the boys to shine yesterday in the middle schools’ tournament and it was action packed!
Seven teams battled it out to qualify for finals day today. Bishop Fitzgerald won their group with Loreto convent also qualifying. St Bernard’s qualified over the other Bishop Fitzgerald team after - nail biting - extra time.
Time ran out so today starts with st Anne’s against st Joseph’s still playing for playoff positions.
Come down and show your support as all schools play for the title. It all starts at 4:15.

Girls interschool hockey
Meet the teams:
(Photos below)
Great weather plus a great turnout of girls for the first of three days of intense hockey. Six teams battling it out and with more matches to be played on finals day on Wednesday, it’s still anybody’s game.
Tomorrow it’s the turn of the boys before all boys and girls play again in the finals on Wednesday.
Come down and support 😊
Big shout out to young Jyan Duo and ever-so-slightly older Brian Buckley for their tireless umpiring - keep up the good work!

The hockey pitches on Thursday night hosted a fun tournament for all junior hockey players as an end to 2018.
Boys and girls from most of the clubs were mixed up, put into teams and thrown into intense 7 a side matches. Two hours of non stop hockey was played, culminating in boxes of chocolates awarded for effort!
Lots of fun, with boys and girls learning to play with players from otherwise different clubs.
The junior coaches strive to encourage competition but also respect as ultimately these are the future players who will eventually compete to represent Gibraltar.
Many thanks to coaches who gave up their time to help out on the day.
