The theme of International Youth Day, 12 August 2015, is “Youth Civic Engagement.” The engagement and participation of youth is essential to achieve sustainable human development. We need more opportunities for youth to engage politically, economically and socially. There has been recent increasing attention and policy and programming focus on youth civic engagement. But yet still more supports and focus should be added to civic engagement of young people at all levels. Beginning with recognizing young people form a separate social group with specific characteristics and expectations. Civic engagement is a way to exploit this potential to enrich society, further human rights and enable improved living conditions for all.
Young people are still faced with different challenges, in sub-Sahara Africa, the illegal migration, harmful drugs abuse and unemployment is still a problem hindering youth development. Young people need more space and skills to develop, which reflects on all societies. Young people need to participate actively in social and economic development.
Happy international youth Day
