五人冰球賽早於1994年開始於香港舉辦，當時由於場地面積限制，把冰球傳統的六人賽制改為五人賽，故名為「五人冰球賽」。而自香港唯一達國際標準溜冰場Mega Ice落成後，這項國際賽事便在Mega Ice舉行，並回復傳統的六人賽制，而比賽名稱則維持「五人冰球賽」。2008年開始，「五人冰球賽」由Mega Ice主辦，更把賽事冠名為「Mega Ice五人冰球賽」。
