From Happy Valley Pitch 9:

25JAN2023 will go down in the annals of HKBUFC as the day when 7 determined players stood their ground against the Rest of HK Desis. It was a classic David vs Goliath match, where HKBUFC 7, missing some of their key players, were practically outclassed in every department, be it speed, stamina, or skill. But the boys in blue had something the Rest of HK Desis did not - determination. Right from the word go the Desis mounted attack after attack on the HKBUFC goal, but were invariably thwarted in or around the box. At 20 minutes, the scoresheet stood at 0-0, and it looked like the match might be held to a stalemate.

And then, the inevitable happened. A superb shot from outside the box by the Desi striker clipped the fingers of the HKBUFC goalie, to land in the upper left corner of the net. Two more goals followed in the next twenty minutes, and the score stood at 3-0, against HKBUFC. The HKBUFC defence was looking truly hapless at the time.
But just as all looked lost, the boys in blue drew on their reserves and experience to pull one back. With the scoreline at 3-1, HKBUFC suddenly seemed to grow larger than life, outmanning the Rest of Desis in their own box time and time again. After missing three consecutive open-net chances, they succeeded in having their name on the scoresheet again as a panicky Desis defence let in an own goal. And then a brilliant header by the HKBUFC striker drew them level at 3-3.

With only 10 minutes of play left, a tiring HKBUFC side went back on the defensive, and there was essentially a repeat of the first half of the game - attempt after attempt being defeated in the HKBUFC box. It looked like the match was headed for a draw, but another superb display of passing by the Desis in the last minute left the HKBUFC defence scouring for options - the grim scoreline stood at 4-3.

This was a battle that David did not win, but it was also one that Goliath lost. To paraphrase a much battered but still standing Rocky Balboa, the HKBUFC 7 proved that they have HEART.

Final score:
HKBUFC 3-4 HK Desis
Game time: 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, 23 Jan 2023

Account of the match HKBUFC played with a local chinese team/ club on 17th July

Daastaan - e HKBUFC
Date: 17th July, 2021
Time: 4:30PM - 6:00 PM
Venue: Man Tung Sports Ground, Tung Chung Teams: HKBUFC vs Chinese Football Team (CFT) 2nd Leg (1st Leg was won by HKBUFC: 7-2)
The Prelude:
The unbearable heat was breathing down on the ground when a bunch of football enthusiasts from HKBUFC was to battle for honor against a Chinese team. The Chinese team had been routed 7-2 in their previous clash, and so they were back for a Revenge match. “Revenge is a dish, best served cold”, but in this case it was being served on a hot summer day under the scorching heat of the sun.
With most regular players of HKBUFC out for today’s match, initially we were not sure if we would be able to even field a team, but “Ek baar jo humne commitment kar di, uske baad toh hum apne aap ki bhi nahin shunte”. So, calls were made, personal messages sent and finally we could come up with a 12-player roster.
The rule was simple, no young players and only 5 substitutions for an 8-a side match, but the fire of revenge was so strong in the Chinese Team, that they got quite a few youngsters, a few guest players including a westerner (who in my opinion was the best of them) and 10 substitute players. So, one set of 8 players played for 15 minutes, only to be completely replaced with a fresh set of 8 players again to play for the next 15 minutes. Rules were broken, but being the lion-hearts that we were, we let it slide only to make a promise to ourselves to bend the rules next time in our favor.
The Team:
GK: Souvik
DEF: Ghosal, Saikat, Anupam
MID: Arun, Ivor
FWD: Indranil, Tapas
Rolling Subs: Som, Karunasis, Pramit, Saby
Manni came in later, but he was suffering from an injury and Saheb was included since the other team flaunted the rules and fielded young players.
The Match:
The Chinese Football Team (CFT) started with their Blue Squad with the Red squad on standby. The HKBUFC team was playing in their Fiery Orange jerseys. The CFT were high in spirits and were confident of a whitewash with their upgraded team (they dropped few of their older team mates in this revenge match). The HKBUFC had drooping shoulders on account of a few missing playmakers and it was evident that it would be a one-sided affair at the onset with the CFT making regular attacks on the HKBUFC goal, but the defense trio of Saikat, Ghosal and Anupam thwarted their attacks. Arun and Ivor tried their level best to control the match in the midfield and create chances for Tapas and Indranil to score, but it was quite difficult matching up to the speed and passing skills of the CFT.
A sudden passing movement between Ivor, Arun and Indranil resulted in the 1st goal for HKBUFC scored by Arun and HKBUFC was back on the saddle.
Score: HKBUFC - CFT: 1 - 0
With the offside rule abolished, a through pass from the edge of the D box found Mr. Cho one on one with the goalkeeper after the ball had passed through Anupam’s legs and the CFT levelled the score Score: HKBUFC - CFT: 1 - 1
Another fast-paced movement by the CFT saw another utilization of the no-offside rule and a shot by Mr. Sung from bottom left corner of the goal post to the right top corner of the goalpost gave Souvik no chance and gave CFT their 2nd goal of the match.
Score: HKBUFC - CFT: 1 - 2
It was time for a break and it was time for a change of squad for the CFT who now they fielded their Red team which had quite a few youngsters under 20s. Some grudges were raised by HKBUFC, but CFT requested to play on and the match continued with a fresh team on one side and a jaded and tired team on the other.
The match started and this time the HKBUFC forwards kept on attacking the CFT goal only being disappointed again and again and again. A through pass from Indranil found Tapas in front of an

empty goal with the goalkeeper away from the goal, but it hit the back of his leg and hence could not be converted. Indranil got 2 more chances but could not increase the goal difference. Happens to the best when they are under tremendous pressure. Meanwhile a corner almost resulted in a CFT goal but was thwarted by Souvik.
Finally, a move between Indranil, Tapas, Ivor and Arun resulted in the equalizer from a side angle goal by Indranil.
Score: HKBUFC - CFT: 2 - 2
The score did not remain level for much long and with the midfield and forwards pushing through, HKBUFC got their 3rd goal courtesy to a deft touch by Indranil.
Score: HKBUFC - CFT: 3 - 2
In this session, Karunasis was superb in the defence with perfect interceptions, clears and man- marking.
It was time for another break and the CFT was relieved to have their Blue Squad back on the ground. They were quite eager to start the match right away, but was made to wait as the HKBUFC players were out of breath. It felt like Saurav Ganguly keeping Steve Waugh waiting for the toss (apologies for the cricket anecdote).
The third session saw the HKBUFC defenders scrambling to keep the CFT attacks at bay and a cross from the edge of the D-Box by the long-haired Mr. Ling was anticipated correctly by the HKBUFC goalkeeper, but the sudden duck by the striker saw the ball rush to the goal injuring Souvik’s finger on its way. It was time for a replacement and Saby replaced him at the goal.
Score: HKBUFC - CFT: 3 - 3
The CFT pushed on with Mr John Doe (the westerner guest player) moving up from Defence to Striker role and the match turned on its heels in favour of CFT. The CFT players were moving with the ball, off the ball and even against the ball. Through passes were made and CFT had their 4th goal courtesy Mr. John.
Score: HKBUFC - CFT: 3 - 4
The 5th goal came immediately with the tiki-taka gameplay and Mr. John controlling the game standing from an offside position but alas the no-offside rule aided the CFT. A bluff by the CFT striker saw the ball land at the feet of Mr. John again and he scored from close range and Saby had no chance in saving the shot.
Score: HKBUFC - CFT: 3 - 5
Another break and the Red squad was back at the field. The HKBUFC shoulders had dropped after conceding 3 back-to-back goals, but HKBUFC had an influx of adrenaline in the form of Manni who was still recovering from an injury but decided to play against all odds and to quote Manni, “I just don’t want our team to lose”. A beautiful passing game between Manni and the resilient Indranil got HKBUFC their 4th goal and Manni was the one to drive the ball to the back of the CFT nets.
Score: HKBUFC - CFT: 4 - 5
A few brilliant displays of energy from Saheb (once even going toe to toe with Mr. John), never say never efforts from Tapas and tiki-taka gameplay between Manni, Indranil and Arun saw this session tilt in favor of HKBUFC and they got their coveted equalizer courtesy of Manni.
Score: HKBUFC - CFT: 5 - 5
The Chinese Team was taken aback at the sudden resurgence of the HKBUFC team, so they now fielded their best 8 combining the Red and Blue Squads. A short 2-minute breather was taken and the match started again with Manni sitting out for HKBUFC owing to his injury acting up once again. The CFT kept on attacking the HKBUFC goal but the resilient HKBUFC defense and jumping and diving Saby kept them from scoring thus adding to the frustration. A close-range powerful shot by the CFT striker Mr. Ling caught Ghosal in the crossfire and Saby had to stretch to parry the ball over the crossbar. Injury could not keep Manni out of the game for long and he was up and running again to score the winning goal for HKBUFC.
Towards the end of the game, a through pass found Tapas one on one with the goalkeeper, but before he could take the shot, the goalkeeper stomped on his leg thus causing him to be disbalanced and in the scuffle, he fell on the goalkeeper but still managed to score the goal. Even though it was a foul by the goalkeeper on a striker and eventually a foul by the striker on the goalkeeper, in the spirit of the game, HKBUFC took the moral high ground, and discarded the goal after an appeal from the opponent team.

The match ended 5 - 5 and there was no time remaining for shoot-out. HKBUFC Scorers: Arun, Indranil, Indranil, Manni, Manni, Tapas (discarded goal) CFT Scorers: Cho, Sung, Ling, John, John
The Postlude:
The CFT was sure that with such a young and huge lineup of players they could exact a revenge of the 7-2 thrashing earlier, but a draw was not what they had envisioned. Even a truck load of players (to quote Karunasis) was not enough to give HKBUFC a run for their money.
The defenders (mainly Anupam, Ghosal and Karunasis) were simply superb and unwavering in spite of the dozens of CFT attacks. Arun, Ivor and Manni controlled the game like Superheroes. Indranil, Tapas were leaving no stone unturned giving their level best. Saby was like the Great Wall at the goal.
A special shout out to Saheb for running up and down the ground and matching the speed and agility of the CFT. Also, a special mention for Som for shouting out instructions from the sidelines (he has what it needs to be a manager. )
The CFT was actually the better side in this match but the end results dictate the outcome of the game.
However, having said that, there are places where HKBUFC needs to improve vastly - instead of long balls, need to concentrate on the passing skills, work on the man-marking abilities, improve on movements off the ball and also be able to take shots at the goal with a running ball.
Well, if this writeup feels like a tribute to HKBUFC, please note that “History is always written by Winners” and a 5-5 draw with a few missing playmakers, playing against the rule-defying younger and double squad of the CFT, it was a moral victory for HKBUFC.
VIVA LA HKBUFC.....The Undefeated Champions.
