RHKYC Storytelling by Hong Kong Shifts - WALDER IP - MEMBER -

“Since I was a kid, I’ve always lived near the water and been lucky to have a sea view from my home. I am also always on the water sailing. Sailing makes me feel so happy and free - all my worries just kind of melt away. I joined the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club a few decades ago, in the Eighties. There were not many Chinese members back then. I got involved in training, volunteering and racing - and met so many new friends through sailing! Eventually, I was nominated to join the Sailing Committee.

One of my passions is to facilitate sailing exchanges between the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and sailing associations in Mainland China. I became involved in liaising with the China Sailing Association to organise training for their crew members. Through this partnership, we were invited to participate in many different races from Hong Kong to the Mainland, including Shenzhen and Hainan. It’s been a great experience as I got to learn a lot about maritime regulations, even immigration laws. It takes time to build trust and relationships with the sailing circles in China but after a lot of effort I became one of the key persons in the liaison committee.

“I really love the environment at RHKYC - it’s beautiful and relaxed. What I treasure most about the Club are the great relationships that I have built over the years. The members are very warm and welcoming and always like to chit chat with me. I also work with great colleagues across departments from different ages and backgrounds. We have lunch together at our staff canteen every day and have formed some great friendships. Even though my commute to work is long - I drive my motorbike for 40 minutes into work every day - I don’t mind at all, because my workplace feels like home to me. I have a couple of days off during the week. I like to relax at home, go to Yum Cha with friends or take my little puppy (Lui Lui) out for walks. I have two sons and they both live in New Zealand. I visited them a few years ago and I can’t wait to be able to travel again to see them soon!”

“Prior to joining the Club, I was in the army and worked with the Hong Kong Marines for 12 years. We did our training at the old Lei Yue Mun Barracks and I made some great friends there. Back in the day, I also did a lot of windsurfing and sailing. I grew up in Cheung Chau and have always loved being near the sea. On a day when I don’t get to see the water, I feel uneasy and incomplete! It’s no surprise that a lot of Cheung Chau islanders end up working with and on the water. When working with the sea you need to be in tune with the climate. I still remember when Typhoon Mangkhut struck in 2018. Many of the sailing boats and dinghies were washed away and destroyed in the storm. I was so upset when I saw the wreck - these were boats that I worked on and helped take care of on a daily basis. The day after the Typhoon we went to Middle Island to assess the damage and I was part of the team which helped recover and restore the site.”

“I’ve been working at RHKYC since 1996. During this time, I have supported the sailing races, overseen the operation of sampans and also helped with other development projects and events at the Club. I spent most of my time at Middle Island, so it’s a place that is dear to my heart. I feel like I’ve become friends with a lot of the members and sometimes they invite me to share some food or drink with them. Over the years, I’ve seen the Club diversify and gain some younger members. More people are taking on water sports these days and there is a much bigger focus on health and fitness. I transferred to Kellett Island late 2021 and am now learning new skills, techniques and getting acquainted with my new colleagues. I’m a bit shy and not a very talkative person; I prefer to just get things done!”

RHKYC Storytelling by Hong Kong Shifts - ANNA LEE FISHER - MEMBER

In 2023, my aim was to go to the World Masters Rowing Regatta in South Africa. I had been training for a year for the event, but I still wasn’t sure that I was able to go as the costs for the trip were quite high. For my birthday, my friends very kindly pooled together some funds for me so that I could make it to the Regatta. It was such a thoughtful gift, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I went alone to South Africa and spent a week there. Before the event, I was so nervous that I was in tears but in the end, I won five gold medals!

I actually gave one of my medals away to a teenage girl at the event. She was also a rower and one of the race volunteers. Because of a knee injury, she thought that she was the reason why her rowing team didn’t do well in a race and was very upset about it. She was so touched when I offered her the medal and is now more motivated than ever to continue rowing!

I have always enjoyed racing and getting into the competition zone. It’s a lot of discipline and hard work, but my go-to comfort meal at the Club after a big race is always pigeon, broccoli and rice!”

Club member Nicholas Halliday had a great day today at the Paris Olympics!

🇭🇰Nicholas Halliday mentioned in the interview that the standing on Day 3(3 August) is important. The Olympic Men's Dinghy ILCA 7 Open Series Races include ten races across five days, so Day 3 means 60% of the races have been completed. Nicholas Halliday finished the 5th race in 18th place and the 6th race with an outstanding 6th place finish. His ranking rose three positions to 25th. 👏👏Good job, Nicholas Halliday! We are proud of you.

Apart from rowing, I spend a lot of time at the Club attending meetings and working. Over the years, I have gotten to know some of the staff pretty well, especially the receptionists who are so thoughtful and kind. I met some of my closest friends here at the Club. Even though we spend most of our time together training and racing, it’s really nice to also get to know people in a social context at all the events organised by the Club.

RHKYC Storytelling by Hong Kong Shifts - ANNA LEE FISHER - MEMBER

“I was not really into sports back in high school, but I picked up rowing at university and have been going ever since! Apart from the physical aspect, I also really love the mental challenge of rowing. I feel like I can be in tune with the wind and the waves. Since joining the RHKYC as a member in 2017, I have steadily increased my involvement in the Club. Currently, I am Chair of the coastal rowing sub-committee, and also part of the fine rowing, events organising and sustainability sub-committees. I think sustainability is so important and I want to contribute to protecting the ocean and to try to achieve clean regatta status for rowing.

I enjoy helping to organise regattas throughout the year. It’s really satisfying to see a big event come into fruition from scratch. I love the sport so much that I want to give back to the sport and to the community. I also hope to motivate more young people to continue rowing and to pass on the sport.

RHKYC Storytelling by Hong Kong Shifts - AH HONG (周寶康) – SENIOR HOUSE SUPERVISOR - (3/3)

I started my career in the F&B industry, and I didn’t know what to expect when I first joined RHKYC. Back then, I had no idea what sailing was all about, and it’s been great to have more exposure to, and learn more about, the sport here. It’s also been fun to meet athletes from all over the world! Working here has opened up a whole new world for me.

Having spent so many years here, a lot of the members know me well and will often check in on me to see how I’m doing. I also work very well with my colleagues; we’re like one big family. Many of us have worked together for at least a decade, if not more. We have annual staff outings and over the years we’ve been all around Hong Kong - Kadoorie Farm, Tung Lung Chau, other remote outlying islands…it’s always good fun. I love being out in nature, so whenever I have some time off you’ll find me camping by the beach or out in the mountains!”

RHKYC Storytelling by Hong Kong Shifts - AH HONG (周寶康) – SENIOR HOUSE SUPERVISOR - (2/3)

I keep a mobile phone with me all day, and it rings up to 200 times a day with all kinds of queries from everyone around RHKYC. I try to always stay calm and polite, no matter how stressful a situation might be. I’ve learned over the years that it’s always better to deal with a situation with a clear head. Getting angry and irritated never really helped anything! I think if you like and respect what you do, it’s easier to enjoy it and embrace the challenges.

One of my most memorable experiences working here was helping to organise the logistics for our Regatta Ball, about 10 years ago. With over 600 guests attending, we faced a massive job to prepare the event space next to the water from scratch - complete with tables, chairs, decorations, catering, sound systems…It was hard work and challenging, to say the least, but I always get a sense of satisfaction after completing such large scale events.
