Vegan Fencer Vivian Kong Is Making History
This video introduces an HK female épée fencer, Vivian Kong, also known as the Queen of Fencing. She is a multi-medalist in the Asian Youth Athletics Championships and was twice awarded the Hong Kong Sports Star Awards. During adulthood, she won two bronze medals in the Incheon 2014 Asian Games and the Jakarta Asian Games, and two gold medals in the Havana and Barcelona Stages in the 2019 Fencing World Cup. She became the first fencer in Hong Kong to clinch a gold medal in large-scale international competitions. She made history for Hong Kong not only by becoming the first fencer in Hong Kong to clinch a gold medal in large-scale international competitions but also by rising to 1st place in world rankings.
Aside from her talent in fencing, she also excelled academically. Attending ESF Shatin College, her IB score of 41/45 secured her a place in the prestigious Stanford University, before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations. She is a true all-rounder.
Majoring in International Relations, she keeps up-to-date with current affairs, often visiting various schools and inspiring others with her own experiences. Being twice injured, instead of being deterred from competing, she became more determined to continue. In this process, she also decided to adopt veganism to facilitate recovery. Despite her rise to the top, Vivian remains humble, crediting her success to her coach, doctors, physiotherapists, nutritionists, and psychologists supporting her along the journey.
