From the moment you approach your opponent it begins. Approach combat in the manner of a man climbing a rope or ladder. You don’t just lunge from wherever you are to the top of the ladder. You work your way up step by step. So too in Jiu jitsu. Work your way up the body to gain ever increasing amounts of control. From grip to off balancing to getting past the opponents legs into pins and then to submission. Don’t get discouraged if you slide down the ladder periodically - this is to be expected - just get right back to climbing. Each time you repeat the process your opponent will be a little more tired and the climb will get a little easier. Every time you try to miss a step and jump higher rather than climb higher you increase the likelihood of falling to the bottom again, so generally favor step by step rather than bounding ahead. This is the mindset of high percentage jiu jitsu
