The Forgotten Genius of Dražen Petrović
Are we absolutely sure we realize how much the 1993 tragedy of Dražen Petrović fundamentally altered the DNA of the NBA?
We worship guys like Luka Dončić and Nikola Jokić today these European maestros who come over and immediately start toy-boxing the best players in the world. But we completely disrespect the original foreign-born offensive genius.
Dražen Petrović wasn't just "good for a European player." In 1993, he was doing things that didn't become mainstream for another twenty years. He was a 6-foot-5 flamethrower shooting 44% from three on massive volume, and he did it with a psychotic level of confidence. He was the only guy in the league who would look Michael Jordan dead in the eye, talk trash in three different languages, and then drop 40 on his head.
He was an absolute offensive supernova.
When he died in that tragic car accident in Germany, the league didn't just lose a New Jersey Nets superstar; it lost the pioneer of the international invasion. If Dražen lives, the European revolution doesn't wait for Dirk or Manu it happens in the mid-90s.
If Dražen is still around for the 1994 and 1995 playoffs, the Eastern Conference hierarchy looks completely different. He was the bridge to the modern game, and we lost him just as he was reaching his peak. It is the most heartbreaking "Sliding Doors" moment in basketball history.

New Jersey Netsi?’ A mi smo dva p**a ove sezone dobili Cavse. U ovom poslu ništa nije slučajno. Ako me sada nisu izabrali, kad će? Pozvali su me da dođem šutirati trice, rekao sam im ‘Ne, hvala. Meni je mjesto na terenu’’

Drazen Petrovic Spent the All-Star Break Competing With Larry Bird
Drazen Petrovic might be the most underrated competitor of the last 40 years. We always hear about Jordan and Kobe having that psychotic work ethic, but this story from Stojko Vrankovic belongs in that same pantheon.
Most guys look at the All-Star break as a chance to go to Miami or Vegas. Drazen saw it as an opportunity to hunt down Larry Bird.
Vrankovic played for the Celtics and dropped this gem about the time Drazen drove up from New Jersey just because he knew Bird was stuck in Boston with a bad back.
“It was the All-Star break. He came from New Jersey to Boston at my place. Larry Bird was not playing in that All-Star. So he used those three days that we go to practice and that he trains together with Larry Bird, competes who is the better shooter, and so on.”
Think about the confidence you need to do that. He didn't want to rest. He wanted to spend three days in an empty gym measuring himself against the best shooter ever. That is the stuff that makes you an absolute legend.

Despite being one of the best shooters ever, even Drazen couldn’t defeat the “big bro curse.”

DC & Petro were one of the most prolific inside-out duets of the early 1990s NBA. Coleman recalls: ‘Draž used to say: ‘Just kick it to me DC, kick it to me, I will make the shot!’
