I've been chatting in recent days with people around the world who work on USAID issues. I agree with those who say the agency needs reform, so I thought I'd see how the Trump/Musk effort is going. Here's what I found.
In Uganda, an effort to limit an Ebola outbreak is hampered because USAID is now out of commission. In NW Nigeria, children are dying because feeding centers have run out of the nutrient-rich RUTF paste that keeps malnourished kids alive; the RUTF is in nearby warehouses, but Musk has created such chaos that there's no one to approve transfer to the feeding centers. A hospital closed in Somalia, with patients sent home in wheelbarrows.
If waste is your concern, then vast amounts of food aid are now rotting because USAID no longer has staff to protect food en route. If security is the issue, then the counter-terrorism staff has been told to stay home and is no longer vetting transfers. It's just chaos, and China is the big winner so far as the US retreats.
Folks, this is a tragedy at so many levels -- and it's also making us less safe.
Readers have been asking what they can do at a personal level, so I end the column with some suggestions. Here's a gift link that should let anyone read the column without hitting a paywall: https://bit.ly/42X787p
