I've never felt famous before but in China... well I kinda did.
Here's a look into our month in China and here's some things that experience brought with it.
I took the month off work and I planned to do content and reply to messages.. well, what high hopes that was!! 😅 China was almost like visiting another planet, so as you could imagine, there was a lot to take in...
For the first time in my life, I kinda felt famous. I wasn't sure if the crowd loved or hated us, wherever we went there was "can I get a photo?", blank stares or the whole room would look and whisper to each other.
What came with it was things you couldn't prepare for. Thoughts like.. "do they like us?" "What are they going to do with those photos?" or question if it's rude to say no to photos because you are simply exhausted.. There's also a high chance I'm on about 5 unpaid advertisements and I'm not even joking (because I was the one holding the signs 🤣)
You would walk out of the hotel in some areas and genuinely feel like the paparazzi was waiting to get the best shot. Now, I don't know what it's like to be famous, but I know one thing for sure, after the first 10 or so unsolicited photo shoots, you start to feel less and less human, almost like an animal on show at a zoo.
This is where it got testing. By the end of the trip, the tiredness kicked in and the fatigue became real. We had to choose to see it as an issue and react, or accept the cameras in our face and trek on to the next location.
That choice is the actual skill. And you don't get a pre-warning before entering China on how to stay yourself when you're being watched, you also have no control over the story being told about you. It's the same skill whether it's a camera overseas or someone's opinion of you back home, you either let it decide who you are, or you don't.
China taught me so many things and this was only a small fraction of lessons I got to bring home. Between the beauty of the country and the wildly efficient cities, there were a whole lot of people that had never seen any other race than their own and honestly I have no idea what that feels like from their side.
