Bintangs and a bull!
In 2025 I got the top fish of my bucket list. A big bull by Mahi Mahi. Got this beauty in Bali with hubby 😍
It was very different experience for me. We just finished our first freediving retreat and I can say I was very relaxed in my dives and felt good in the water. BUT, diving for Mahi is not deep🤣it’s right under the surface, like 30cm. Who would thought that I will feel so clumsy and awkward to dive 30cm below surface 🤣
Do you get buck fever? I do! Huge. Always when I see a new species or big fish I start to shake with excitement and adrenalin. I missed heaps of good fish because of that🤣 but🤷🏼♀️
So, with this fish, it was no different. It was like the 3rd good Mahi I saw that day so I was not shaking as much, but when it came closer I knew it was a big bull and our last drift of the day! I shot it a bit too low as it was a far short🤔 my husband was yelling to let the fish run but in excitement I’ve heard pull it up🤣 lucky he secured it with a second shot just in time S as my spear fell out.
So, it was a team work, well maybe more Ant saving my fish so i get to tell the story🤣
Wahoo is my target fish for 2026. What is yours? Let’s get out there and get it in 26! Happy new year!

SUPER SLAM ON SPEAR - blue marlin, black marlin, striped marlin, sailfish. FIRST WOMAN Nikki Watt to achieve this!
Watch an inspiring and incredible story of this superwoman. 👇🏼READ
Nikki Watt I finally had a time to watch the full video! Incredible!

When I first started spearfishing, landing a marlin was unfathomable. Not within reach. Completely unrealistic, and only achievable by the world's best. It was only for the bravest, the strongest, and let's be honest, the men.
This view was formed by an impressionable, much younger version of myself who at the time didn't have the understanding, knowledge or experience.
Despite overcoming and refuting these ideas, never in my life did I imagine I would spear a 162.5kg Striped Marlin in Australian waters; especially since the 'big' fish are commonly found off the coast of New Zealand!
To some it is obvious how amazing the fishery off New South Wales is, but to get the opportunity to spear this particular fish from a bait ball is something I will never forget. Not only a memorable catch personally, but something for the record books. And to have landed it with such good company, who I hope will claim this fish as their own as much as mine.
Thankfully I landed the fish 'unassisted', which means it qualifies to be submitted for the record books. As it stands, it is set to become:
IBSRC Open and Women's World Record (current WR
156.6kg by David Mullins, NZ 2004)
IUSA Women's World Record (current WR 119.5kg by Rochele Davey (nee Potter), NZ 2019)
Australian Open and Women's Record (current OR
139.4kg by Luke Pattrick, 2016)
NSW Open and Women's Record
And unofficially, the final piece to my personal goal of completing a super slam on spear (black marlin, blue marlin, striped marlin and sailfish). As far as I am aware, no other woman in the world has achieved this!
Please feel free to educate me if I am wrong!
Although this fish is incredibly special in its own right, it is so much more for me. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in December, all of who I was started to slip away. To go through such a difficult time in my life and come out on the other side, and substantially exceed all expectations, feels really fu***ng good.
