After almost six months of competitive action in the Achill Pub Pool, it came to a finish last night with the Shield & Cup Finals Night in Ted's Bar.
*SHIELD FINAL*
Alices B took on The Compass Bar to see who would be crowned the 1st ever winners of this new competition.
The Currane lads got off to a great start with both Stephen Grealis & JD O' Malley winning the first 2 frames. Alices B came fighting back & took the next 3 frames through Aiden Kilbane, Oisin Grealis & Diarmuid Cooney.
Pat Gerry leveled it up to make it 3-3 after the 1st 6 singles matches.
They extended their lead in the Doubles matches with Paraic Patten & JP O' Malley, then Stephen & JD winning their matches.
Joey Dunleavy & Oisin Grealis won the last Doubles to make it a 5-4 scoreline.
The Currane men took the next 2 frames through Rory Gallagher & JD so that meant Pat Gerry could decide the outcome. In a close battle with Jack, Pat held his nerve to make the all important pot to win it for hi team.
Fantastic achievement & congratulations to The Compass Bar team who were deserved winners on the night & they were also without important players on the night in Diarmuid O' Malley, Pat Cooney, Seamus Gallagher & Jason Cattigan. Commiserations to all the Alices B team captained by Jack Kilbane who had some memorable victories throughout the league campaign & will be back stronger & more experienced for next season.Tony McGing & Mary Molloy made the presentation to Captain on the night Paraic Patten to great scenes & noise from the onlooking crowd๐๐๐
*CUP FINAL*
Finally after many years of trying & being so close to winning the league, it was Alices A that came out victorious on a 8-5 scoreline over Pattens Bar to be crowned champions for 2026๐
As always both teams were evenly matched heading into the Final so a great match was in prospect for everyone.
After the first 6 singles matches, Alices A held a 4-2 lead over their opponents with David Ryder, Micheal Mcloughlin, Eamonn Dunleavy & Kieran McGinty winning frames for them while Stuart Latimer & Jake Stanton won for Pattens.
The doubles section saw Alices winning 2 of 3 frames through Cathal Mcloughlin & Eamon, then Kieran & Ger Ryan. Stuart & Jake got 1 frame for Pattens to leave the score at 6-3.
So it was into the last set of singles & Pattens won the first two with Ian Sheehy & Stuart winning to bring their team within 1 frame of Alices.
Cathal got the next one meaning if Ger could beat Blondie Kilbane, it would be theres.
Not much between the two of them in this match, Ger gave himself a black on the cushion to double it to the middle pocket, he composed himself, then make a great pot to seal the victory for Alices A๐ Great scenes of celebrations followed afterwards. The big crowd that was in Teds Bar erupted into cheers & noise.
Ian & Stuart who was the captain of Pattens team received the Runners-up prize money from Paul Gallagher. Hard luck to all the Pattens team who came up just short after another great season overall. They'll be back next year stronger & hungrier than ever hoping to win it.
Then it was time for the winners to be crowned.
Captain of the Alices A team, Micheal Mcloughlin called up his teammates to receive their trophies & the winners prize money from Paul and then he finally lifted the Michael Mcloughlin Memorial Cup that every team wants to win๐
Great achievement for all their team & especially for Micheal & Cathal who's father this competition is in memory off. A man who had done so much for pool in Achill in the past & hopefully he was looking down with great pride in his sons winning. Congrats to all of their players๐๐
Big thanks to Joe, Deirdre & all the staff of Teds Bar for hosting the final, it was a superb venue for it & also for the food midway through the match, very much appreciated๐
