Less sh*t meetings—wouldn’t that be nice?
We’ve all been there—that dreaded feeling when you think, “Where are they going with this? …”
The unanimous leading challenge I hear in my work and when facilitating training on Meeting Facilitation is how to politely handle it when conversations go off-topic, especially when it’s a senior leader.
👉 One tip I share: At the start of the meeting, get participants' buy-in that you may need to pause discussions to stay on track. If things start to drift, you could say something like:
“May I pause you there, [Senior Leader’s Name]? What you’ve shared is valuable, and I appreciate your insights. As we’re almost out of time, I want to make sure we hear other people's perspectives on [topic]. What solutions or ideas can anyone share to move us forward on [topic question] today?”
Thanks, Public Affairs Ireland, for giving me the opportunity to facilitate "Mastering the Art of Successful Meeting Facilitation", and to all the participants who brought the topic to life!
I’d love to hear your best tips for making meetings less sh*t, more focused, productive, and engaging, especially when you’ve got a leader who tends to over-share! 😊

I had such a great time delivering an interview skills training workshop for the Sudanese Doctors Union of Ireland (SDUI) members at Tralee University Hospital last weekend. This was my first time working with doctors from Sudan, and I was genuinely blown away by their warmth, dedication to their patients, and commitment to learning and growing.
Our healthcare system is so much better for having them in it, and I feel lucky to have been a tiny part of their journey. A big thank you to Sudanese Doctors Union of Ireland and University Hospital Kerry for making it happen – I really enjoyed it!
