๐ฃ Rebel County SAC โ March Species Hunt
---------------
March actually decided to behave itself for once โ wellโฆ slightly.
Still a few savage gusts, the odd soaking, and more than one fella wondering why he didnโt just stay home on the couch watching Britains got Talent.๐ฉ
But overall, conditions lifted enough to let the fish and the anglers show a bit more activity this month.
-------------
๐ Summary
โข Solid increase in species variety
โข Multiple club records smashed
โข Proper shake-up in the overall leaderboard
March wasnโt just busy โ it was a bit of a statement month.
----------------
๐ March Leaderboard (Top 5)
1st โ Noel Lane | 12 species | 19.1 pts
2nd โ Ben Hammill | 4 species | 6.8 pts
3rd โ Shane Olden | 2 species | 6.0 pts
4th โ Callum Looney | 2 species | 5.2 pts
5th โ Jacob Murphy | 3 species | 4.2 pts
Noel Lane absolutely langered the lot of us this month โ didnโt even leave the crumbs. The rest of us were left scrapping for scraps like a load of bai's outside hillbillys on a Saturday night.
โญ Angler of the Month
March goes to Noel Lane (Junior Member) โ and fair play, the young fella he's grafting around the clock so its well deserved.
โข 12 species landed
โข 3 club records
โข 19.1 points
Club records included:
Conger โ 122cm (a right baiter of a fish altogether)
Sand Goby โ 5cm (blink and youโd miss him)
Corkwing Wrasse โ 9cm
That Conger alone would have most lads wobbling at the knees โ proper brute of a fish and no mistake.
Serious talent coming through there ๐
-------------------
๐
Top 10 Overall Leaderboard
The race is really heating up now โ no one is safe:
1st โ George OโHara | 14 species | 24.4 pts
2nd โ Gab Matejko | 15 species | 24.1 pts
3rd โ Noel Lane | 13 species | 20.2 pts
4th โ Shane Olden | 10 species | 17.7 pts
5th โ Callum Looney | 10 species | 16.1 pts
6th โ Leo Napier | 9 species | 14.5 pts
7th โ Ben Hammill | 10 species | 14.3 pts
8th โ Noah Tahran | 8 species | 14.1 pts
9th โ Danny OโShea | 9 species | 12.8 pts
10th โ Sean OโSullivan Ryan | 7 species | 10.9 pts
George clinging on at the top for March. Thats another fella out grafting day and night for the species hunt. The misses will have his bags packed at the front door one of these days.
--โ--------------
๐ Other notable Fish of the Month
Shane Olden also dropped a proper headline fish:
โข Club Record Spur
โข 125cm / 22.46lb
Thatโs not a fish you casually land โ thatโs a fish that lands you if youโre not paying attention. A right baiter of a specimen altogether. Daycent fish. Beating his old club record of 18.33lb and also just 2lb short of beating the current Irish boat record , biggest recorded spurdogs from the shore are just 19lb and just over , but controversialy we are the only country that class shore and boat records as one , but going by records from shore catches it certainly is a record breaking fish .
-----------------
All in all, March was the first proper taste of things kicking off โ more fish, better variety, and a leaderboard starting to look like a scrap rather than a procession.
If this keeps going, weโre in for a daycent year.
Tight lines lads โ and remember:
if you think youโve got it figured out, the fish will humble you quick enough ๐๐ฃ

Saturday April 4th
Slob bank youghal ๐จ
A change of venue from the scheduled clonea strand
Because of a yellow warning for wind and rain , undeterred saw the rebels answer back with their own red warning signalling we are on the way . The back up venue for the day was the slob bank youghal which varied the wind to our backs and some times from our right hand side which was a lot better than a head on wind of that strength on any beach . As bad as it was some rebels still managed to keep their shelters fixed to the ground for much welcomed shelter from the rain . The wind was so bad that poor benji HAMMILL lost fishing gear every time he opened his seat box consisting of 2 pkts of sakuma hooks , a pkt of pop ups and a packet of swivels , and if that wasn't bad enough he went to take his phone from his pocket to take a pic of Noah's 40cm flounder and a ten euro note went flying down the bank and into the water , at one stage I see 2 guys trying to retrieve it from the water trying all sorts as if it was a 500 euro note ๐ we won't name and shame them but we'll blame the price of diesel as an excuse this time ๐๐. Back to the fishing and not having high expectations for the time of year, a long time had passed before the first fish was brought to the measure , that was for our very own minny SOD AKA Stephen watkins with a 37cm flounder . Next up but some time later was John o MAHONY with a double shot of a flounder and a schoolie bass . Hunkered down and tipping away as true rebels do next up was Callum looney with a dog fish to get the junior side of things on the move and close behind him was Luca Hurley with a 36cm bass and a contender for the biggest round fish pool so far . Surely but very slowly the odd fish was turning up while all tactics and distances were exhausted . Next was the flat fish pool contender and probably sealing it off was Noah tahran with a fine conditioned 40cm flounder and it was a turning point driving most lads to target dogfish to try make up some ground but again not many to be had . In the last hour or so the baker boy himself gabriel matejeko managed to find a few fish at distance once the w**d cleared and slowly but surely advanced on those that were lucky enough to find fish in day light hours . 10pm and it was time for lines in and back to the comfort of our cars to tally the scores for our last comp before we take a well earned break until September opening up time for lads to focus on our club species hunt .

As always the rebels persued and produced fish on a very tough day weather wise , and though the tic-tacs got shook up more than ever with that wind, it was what it was on the day . I'd like to thank everyone that turned out on the day with a good turn out of 23 anglers as deterring as it was , also our followers and sponsors who are also part of the team . Our next comp will be mid break in June for our annual smoothound comp sponsored by the tackle shop cork, but we should have plenty of content through out the summer months as rebels scatter all over the country species hunting and hopefully setting a few new club records . MONATRAE BAY AGAIN ๐
Saturday 21st of March saw the rebels head for monatrae bay again but a scheduled choice this time as last time it was a back up venue . The 4th leg of our 2026 master angler comp fishing from 4:30 to 9:30 and after a week of south easterly winds switching to a south westerly on the day was sure to produce fish though the hours of daylight fishing involved and the blistering sun light was a gamble . This time with 4 different flavours of TIC-TACS we gave it a shot . About 30 seconds from cast off new member Peter Burton put the first fish on the cards with a schoolie bass , and a pace that quick draw mcgrath would have been proud of . Hoping it was a sign of something good but generally its short lived especially with day light hours and time of year . Next on the fish some time later was Stephen watkins with a 34cm bass and an early contender for biggest round fish pool .as for daylight that was all she wrote especially with most flounders gone off to spawn from our shores . Awaiting darkness and a dropping tide we knew things would pick up . As darkness fell it did just that , not to any great numbers but it gave the rebels something to push on for . Mainly smalls and as usual no sign of dogfish when you need them . Some lads found a sweet spot and were able to make the better pace . With a turn out of 20 anglers we knew the fish count would still be poor as most winter species have all ready migrated to off shore as well . The variety of species also gave the rebels confidence in their tactics and then knew they were doing nothing wrong and I must say they caught everything that was in front of them . New member on the day was Mark Costello welcome aboard Mark , good to see you out with the rebels ๐ lines in was called , and most anglers had found a few fish , time to head back to the cars to tally the scores !!

๐ฃ Rebel County SAC โ February Species Hunt
February didnโt exactly bring tropical conditions to Cork โ more of the same: cold hands, sideways rain, and the occasional choice of hobbie being questioned mid-cast.
But once again, the Rebel County crew soldiered on, because just like the The boy Olden says, "Rebels Dont Rust"..
The rods were out, the rigs were tangled, there was sand in our jocks, socks and knickers, and the fishโฆ well, they cooperated just enough to keep us all coming back for more.
Out of the group, 16 anglers stepped up and put fish on the board, with a total of 46 submissions for the month.
Not as hectic as January โ but still very respectable considering the conditions. Weโll take that all day long.
-------------------
๐ The Numbers
For the stat merchants
(you know who ye are)
46 fish landed this month
17 different species (yes, 17 ๐)
16 anglers registering fish on the board for Feb
Thatโs actually more species than January with fewer fish โ quality over quantity, Daycent๐.
-------------------
๐ Species Breakdown
A serious mixed bag this month, with a few curveballs thrown in for good measure:
Bass
Bull Huss
Coalfish
Cod
Conger
Dab
Dogfish
Flounder
Goby (Sand)
Pollack
Poor Cod
Pouting
Ray (Painted)
Rockling (Shore)
Rockling (5 Bearded)
Smelt (Sand)
Whiting
From a few tiny Gobies to proper Conger action, it had a bit of everything. February clearly didnโt get the memo that itโs supposed to be a โquietโ fishing month, but we won't complain
----------------------
๐ February Leaderboard
1st โ Gab Matejko | 11.7 pts | 7 species
2nd โ Danny OโShea | 8.7 pts | 7 species
3rd โ Shane Olden | 8.6 pts | 6 species
4th โ George OโHara | 4.9 pts | 3 species
5th โ John OโMahony | 4.6 pts | 3 species
A tight enough battle at the top, but Gab pulled away with a strong mix of species and a bit of record-breaking flair (more on that below).
---------------
๐ Thornback Ray Challenge
No change at the top here โ Noah Tahran, the one and only Kebab is still holding firm with his 65cm Thornback Ray.
Once again, a few rays made appearancesโฆ and some of them again mysteriously avoided the measuring mat. Lads, itโs not a ghost story competition โ if itโs not measured, it didnโt happen ๐
The 65cm mark still stands. Plenty of time to knock him off itโฆ if someone remembers to bring a measure mat.
--------------------
โญ Angler of the Month
This one was never in doubt.
Februaryโs Angler of the Month goes to Gab Matejko, who didnโt just catch fish โ he went full steam ahead in February and landed three club records:
Dab โ 27cm
Goby (Sand) โ 4cm (yesโฆ FOUR ๐)
Pouting โ 18cm
It takes a special kind of angler to turn a 4cm Goby into club history โ and fair play, thatโs exactly what Gab did.
Proof once again: measure everythingโฆ even the ones youโd nearly flick back without looking.
Unreal going altogether, fair play tya Gab ๐
--------------------
๐
Top 10 Overall Leaderboard
The bigger picture is starting to take shape now:
1st โ Gab Matejko | 14 species | 23 pts
2nd โ George OโHara | 13 species | 21.8 pts
3rd โ Noah Tahran | 8 species | 14.1 pts
4th โ Shane Olden | 8 species | 11.6 pts
5th โ Leo Napier | 7 species | 11.1 pts
6th โ Callum Looney | 8 species | 10.9 pts
7th โ John OโMahony | 6 species | 9.8 pts
8th โ Edwina Galvin | 7 species | 9.5 pts
9th โ Ben Hammill | 6 species | 7.5 pts
10th โ Sean OโSullivan Ryan | 5 species | 7.4 pts
Still plenty of movement to come, but Gab has put down a serious marker early in the year.
All in all, February delivered โ more species, tight competition, and just enough madness to keep things interesting.
If this carries on, weโre in for some year altogether.
Tight lines lads โ and keep the heads up, springโs not far away now. We'll be fishing in the shorts and t shirts before we know it.๐๐ฃ

BALLYNAMONA BEACH COMP ๐ฃ
SATURDAY MARCH 7TH saw the rebel county sea anglers head to ballynamona beach for the 3rd match of the 2026 master angler competition. A nice strong turn out of 25 anglers out of a scheduled 27 and once again the rebels got a chance to shake their TIC-TACS !! What was anticipated to be a fruitful comp with past sessions proving to be a great scratching beach and some larger fish over darkness just didn't stand up to form . News of other clubs across the coast having similar results on the day of one's and two's per angler so we can't complain. It started off barren and slow with all ranges from a few feet out to some pushing for around the 200 yard mark searching for fish but nothing was to be had . As the tide pushed in , the water depth increased as it hit the sand bar at our feet and fish started to turn up , mainly at distance with very little to show along the usual gully. Regardless of catch rate every angler across the line was locked in and trying hard with all technique's and TACTICS been tried . Flounder were first to turn up but unusually scarce for the venue . First sizeable fish was Chris whelan with a 49cm bass in daylight . A few more smalls with a surprise turn out of a few gilt head bream before darkness fell . Dusk onwards saw a slight improvement but nothing to get excited about but the lads kept the pressure on and fished hard . Sean o Sullivan was next for a sizeable fish with a bass of 54cm and looking good to take biggest round fish pool . Still driving on the lads kept the fish coming with some targeting the elusive dogfish that tend to be scarce on comps when needed and in an annoying abundance when pleasure fishing. One last shake of the TIC-TACS for Noah tahran produced a lovely 60cm bass just before end of comp , must have been the new combo flavour they brought out on our request crab and black lug that done the trick ๐๐!! We would also like to welcome our newest member Peter Burton who on his debut with the club put in a great effort and managed the top 5 , well done and welcome aboard Peter ๐๐ฃ๐ช๐ฅ
10pm came and lines were in to end the session and back to the car park it was to tally the scores !!

MONATRAE BAY SATURDAY 21ST FEBUARY !!
Saturday the 21st the REBELS headed for monatrae bay after a quick venue change from the front strand youghal because of high winds and surf which also held a lot of w**d . There was a turn out of 25 anglers out of a scheduled 26 on the day which took up the full length of the bay . On arrival the wind was coming from our right hand side being a westerly which is our favoured wind direction for the venue , along with good tides it was shaping up to be an excellent session until a very heavy sea fearing fog was awaiting us which has a history of dampening or switching fish activity off if not to a very sparce pase of catch rate. Not to be deterred the REBELS took to the challenge and the cards that we were dealt and got down to business. First out of the traps and on the fish was BEN HAMMIL
With a flounder of 31cm , close behind him was DAVID DINEEN with a sea trout that if bigger goes well on the pan but unfortunately not a counter for the score cards. Next inline was myself with a flounder and things slowly but surely started to pick up pace along the line up of 25 anglers. As usual , for those short on tactics we had tic tacs !! TYRONE LOONEY went along to all anglers handing out boxes of tic tacs in multiple flavours to keep lads mouths on the move Incase their rod tips weren't ๐๐ . As darkness crept in the activity picked up and size of fish was also improving , even the appearance of a few small codling which are like hens teeth these days . As the night pushed on it was clear which pegs were at favour and some lads heading for double figures on their score cards while the rest were at a foggy pace but it kept us on the move . Lines up at 10pm and a few guys taught they were up with a chance until the cards with and approaching double figures were handed in which is great to see on such a foggy night but it was possible and it was done .
PLACINGS ON THE DAY:
1ST PLACE DANNY O SHEA 15 FISH 414 POINTS๐
2ND JACOB MURPHY 283 POINTS ๐
3RD BEN HAMMIL 281 POINTS ๐

WINNER OF OUR BONUS BALL DRAW WAS GEORGE O HARA ๐

SPECIES CAUGHT !!
ROCKLING 16...... WHITING 14.....COAL FISH 44......CODLING 7.....DOGFISH 3........BASS 3.......FLOUNDER 11 ..... TOTAL CATCH 98 FISH !!
All in all it was a great comp as usual and plenty of banter to be had , even the dodgy backs with stood the 5 hours fishing on the large stones better than we normally do lol . Also a big welcome to our newest members who turned out on the day..... JOHN MARTIN , PAUL FORDE , KENNETH BARRY , CHRISTOPHER WHELAN and NOEL LANE .... WELCOME ABORAD LADS ๐ซก๐ฃ๐ Our next comp is scheduled for ballynamona on the 7th of March and hopefully it's fruitful in fish and report , thanks to all our sponsors and followers ..... --Rebel County SAC-- Species Hunt Report๐ฃ
May โข June โข July โข August
--------
๐ผ MAY โ A Cracking Start and a Bass to Remember
May set the tone for the summer, and leading the way was Leo Napier, aka Leo the Lion. Great work in taking Angler of the Month with a great run of species and steady scoring. Heโll be presented with his Fish Locker mug and voucher at the next comp โ and that's a real badge of honour around here.
One of the biggest talking point of May has to be Benjiโs superb 10lb 14oz bass during the Tag-A-Ray comp. After a long dayโs fishing, he produced a serious fish worthy of any Cork or Kerry shoreline.
Massive credit goes to George OโHare, who assisted with the landing and nearly donated himself to the tide more than once. The bass gave a fight โ but George gave the entertainment, stumbling around the rocks like a fella who was after a few to many
Top 5 โ May:
1. Leo Napier โ 9 pts โ 5 fish
2. Chris Greene โ 7.7 pts โ 4 fish
3. Martin O Hare โ 5.1 pts โ 3 fish
4. Sean OโS R โ 5 pts โ 2 fish
5. George OโHa โ 2.8 pts โ 1 fish
A strong month with good species variety and a few daycent catches.
---
๐๏ธ JUNE โ Slow Fishing, Big Moment
June was quieter across the board, with conditions making fishing feel more like guesswork than sport. Still, one moment shone through the gloom: Noah Tahranโs new club-record 84.5cm Garfish.
A long, sleek, spectacular fish โ easily one of the best catches of the season.
Points โ June:
John O Mahony โ 7.2 pts โ 3 fish
Vlad Nosov โ 5.4 pts โ 2 fish
Noah Tahran โ 2.4 pts โ 2 fish
Sean OโS R โ 1.9 pts โ 1 fish
You know it was a slow month when one fish gets a fella on the leader board
-------
๐ฅ JULY โ Things Kick Back Into Gear
July brought life back into the marks, and right at the centre of it was Vlad Nosov, who claimed Angler of the Month with a phenomenal 154cm tope.
A fish of real strength โ the kind you would usually only see on a David Attenborough documentary.
The month also featured:
Sean OโSullivan Ryan landing a cracking 107cm smoothhound (while preparing super cute sea shell wedding favors for his upcoming big day)
John O Mahony pulling a hefty 70cm dogfish from Kennedy pier in Cobhโ clearly on his home turf
Shane Olden, who somehow turned a goby session into a wrestling match with a stinger on size 6 hooks and light 8lb line
The netting operation wasโฆ memorable. Letโs leave it at that.
Top 5 โ July:
1. Noah Tahran โ 20.3 pts โ 9 fish
2. John O Mahony โ 15.1 pts โ 10 fish
3. Sean OโS R โ 13.2 pts โ 6 fish
4. Shane Olden โ 10.6 pts โ 6 fish
5. Vlad Nosov โ 9.2 pts โ 3 fish
A busy month with some excellent scores all round.
-------
โ๏ธ AUGUST โ Records Rolling In
August was one of the most productive months of the season, with 3 new club records falling in quick succession:
Shane Olden โ 15.5cm Tompot Blenny
SHANE OLDEN - 3 beard rockling 43cm .
Vlad โ 15cm Dragonette
Two small fish, but proving the old saying that size doesn't matter,(sometimes anyway) and a propper 3 bearded rockling .
With the tie settled by points, Shane takes Angler of the Month with a strong 25.4 points
Top 5 โ August:
1. Kieran Ryan โ 28.8 pts โ 16 fish
2. John O Mahony โ 27.1 pts โ 10 fish
3. Shane Olden โ 25.4 pts โ 11 fish
4. Benji Hammill โ 17.6 pts โ 8 fish
5. Noah Tahran โ 14.7 pts โ 7 fish
Some fantastic numbers here โ August really delivered for the Rebels.
-------
๐ฃ WRAP-UP
Across four months we saw everything:
big fish, surprise Personal bests, new club records, dramatic net jobs, and enough stories to keep the what's app group lit up thru out the summer months.
Special thanks to our supporting sponsors,
John at Fish Locker for his inspiration, tips and prizes
Noel in the Tackle Shop, for keeping the lads stocked and skint
Murrayโs for emergency last-minute tackle and bait raids
The Angling Hub for all our mail order tackle needs
DAYCENT PRINT for all our printing and paper work .
Donatelloโs Pizza, the official meal of shattered broken anglers after a long competition.
Hereโs to the next stretch โ more species, more craic, and more pure daycent Rebel County fishing.
Well done to every angler who put in the time and effort
Until next time ,Up the Rebels๐๐ฎ๐ช

Rebel County SAC โ April Species Hunt Report
April brought Daycent fishing and Good craic for the Rebel County lads (and lady) as the species hunt rolled on in fine form. Great effort by all club members this month โ rods bent, rigs tangled, and more โit was definitely a double figureโ stories than we could count!๐คฃ
With the temperatures creeping up, the wrasse came in thick and fast, filling the species hunt what's app group (and a few in the bait boxes when they got too curious). Mini species have been nibbling away in numbers too, keeping everyoneโs eyes glued to the tips. Out on the beaches, smoothhounds have started to show, and by the looks of it, theyโre here for the summer party.๐ฆ
A few serious fish hit the deck in April, with a number of specimens put forward for Angler of the Month,
Vlad Nosov โ Gilthead Bream 47cm
Ben Hammill โ Gilthead Bream 49cm
Shane Olden โ Gilthead Bream 44cm
Chris Greene โ Specimen 3-Bearded Rockling 32cm
But after much debate, and probably a few โare you sure thatโs 50cm?โ moments, George OโHara claimed the title of Angler of the Month with not one, but two specimen gilthead bream at 48cm and 50cm. An unbelievable bit of fishing โ Congratulations George, youโve set the bar high!๐

With May shaping up nicely and the summer species moving in, things are about to get even more interesting. Rumor has it thereโs already talk of stingray, undulates and tope โ but weโll believe it when we see the photos (with the measuring mat fully visible, lads!).๐
