With the good weather set to continue for the next couple of days, it’s worth reminding you that there are some important steps to take if you are planning on heading out on to the golf course to ensure that you remain healthy throughout the round, and for the competitors amongst you to still be able to challenge as you come down the last 3 or 4 holes.
Hydration
1. Drink plenty of water before heading out on to the course and then sip water consistently as you play. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty and then gulp down the entire bottle.
2. Sports drinks or water with electrolytes can help top up the salt levels that you’ll lose as you sweat.
3. If you plan ahead then drop a water bottle into the freezer the night before – it’ll defrost as you play so you’ll have ice cold water all the way round (this is a personal favourite of mine).
4. Take snacks on to the course (nuts, fruits etc).
5. We sell water and other drinks in the shop if you’ve forgotten. Not that this is a sales pitch.
Sun Protection
1. Apply suncream at least 20 minutes before you tee off – top this up on the 8th and 14th tees at a minimum. Please avoid using aerosol types on the course as these can kill the grass - see photo attached.
2. If you’ve forgotten to apply it before you arrive, then we sell golf specific brands of suncream (with applicators that mean the lotion doesn’t get on to your hands and make them and your grips greasy).
3. Wear light-coloured clothes – don’t try to impersonate Seve in a fetching all navy outfit!
4. If you are like me and no longer possess a thick mop of hair – then wear a hat. Many brands now come with built in UV protection. Ask in the shop if you need a new one (again, I promise this isn’t a sales pitch).
Miss the Fairway
1. I tell my playing partners I miss them on purpose so I can spend more time in the shade. Don’t walk down the middle of the fairway if it’s baked in sunshine – get to the side.
2. Use umbrellas to make your own shade. We have a load left over from the winter months in the shop. Cillian will happily do you a deal. This is seeming like a sales pitch now isn’t it.
3. If there’s a wait on a tee or fairway for slower groups (you know who you are) – then step aside to a shady spot, or use a Mahon branded umbrella, and take a seat and wait. Whilst you’re sipping on a lovely cold bottle of Tipperary Spring Water which can be bought in the shop.
Finally – you can walk off the course at any point if you think you’re going to struggle. The course will be there another day waiting for you.
If you do start to feel unwell then don’t try and tough it out – let your playing partners know.
Me, Cillian, Brian or Finn can head out to you in a buggy and can bring cold water or get you back safely if needed.
Enjoy it whilst you can!
