This is something I’ve learned both as a coach… and as a parent.

When we think about building skills, we often imagine effort, practice, or getting things “right.”
But many important skills don’t grow best under pressure.

They grow in moments of connection.
In shared experiences.
In small challenges.

In trying, losing, and trying again.

Sometimes what looks like “just playing a game”
is actually something much deeper.

Ever sat in the car for a minute after school pickup just to take a breath?

Sometimes that pause is exactly what parents need.

Parents of neurodivergent children often give a lot of themselves.

Their attention.
Their patience.
Their emotional energy.

Which is why small moments of care for yourself matter too.

Not because you are stepping away from your family, but because caring for yourself helps you show up again tomorrow.

We talk a lot about supporting children.
But supporting parents is just as important.

Because when parents are supported, families breathe a little easier.

When we only look at behaviour, it’s easy to judge.

But behaviour is often just the surface.

Underneath there may be overwhelm, frustration, fear, unmet needs, or a nervous system that is struggling.

Curiosity helps us see what judgement cannot.

Many people I work with have spent years believing they just need to try harder.
Be more organised.
Be more disciplined.
Be less forgetful.

Self-criticism can become a constant background voice.

But what if the shift begins somewhere else?

What if understanding yourself works better than judging yourself?

Something powerful happens when safety and understanding appear.

People stop defending themselves and start becoming themselves.

When someone feels judged or misunderstood, much of their energy goes into protection:
explaining
masking
justifying
hiding mistakes
avoiding criticism

But when they feel safe, something shifts.

Energy that once went into defence becomes available for:
curiosity
learning
growth
self-expression

This is why connection matters so much.

Have you ever experienced a moment where someone’s understanding changed everything for you?

It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are. - E. E. Cummings

For many people, growing up is not just about age.
It is about slowly letting go of the expectations, labels, and stories that were placed on us.

Sometimes those stories sound like:
“You should try harder.”
“You’re too much.”
“You’re not enough.”
“You should be more like everyone else.”

Becoming who you really are means questioning those stories.

It means noticing what actually feels true for you.

And that takes courage.

Especially if your brain works differently.
Especially if you’ve spent years trying to fit into systems that were not designed for you.

So here is a question to sit with today: What part of yourself are you learning to accept or reclaim right now?

In the middle of a difficult moment, it can feel like we need to react immediately.

But sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is pause.

When emotions are big, regulation matters more than perfection.
Sometimes the most supportive thing we can do is pause, breathe, and begin again.

Sometimes the biggest shift in parenting isn’t a new strategy.
It’s a new way of seeing.
