Another super and simple idea from Brené Brown - asking each team member to use 2 words to describe how they are feeling at the start of a Zoom meeting. In my view this is definitely more effective than the usual "how are you" and the usual response of "fine", "grand". Emotional Intelligence can be applied anywhere, even on Zoom!
How Brené Brown Runs Emotionally Intelligent Zoom Meetings
It's a sign of true leadership, especially during challenging times.

"Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans". Well this can certainly be said of 2020 so far for many of us! This excellent article focuses on Brené Brown's wise words on the learning that is there for us when we fall or our plans go askew and the most important piece which is getting back up each time.

In Ireland many of us are 4-6 weeks into a new routine of working from home. As work consumes so much of our week it is important to look at how we are finding it, what is working well and what needs to be tweaked.

Working from home: Yet another perspective!
You may have already seen lots of articles and videos on the topic of working from home given the volume of people who are working from home at the moment. I won’t claim to have tips that are completely new or unique but wanted to share my personal and professional perspective on the topic as I worked from home for many years and learned a lot during that time!

How do I show up as an interviewer?
Have you ever asked yourself this question - how do I show up as an interviewer? How do I come across to candidates as an interviewer and/ or a hiring manager? For many of us interviewing internal and external candidates is part and parcel of our day to day responsibilities but the plural in the word responsibilities is key here, interviewing is only one of many deliverables that we may have within a busy role. This is why many interviewers may not have the opportunity or the time to consider how they show up as interviewers and what they could possibly do to build on and enhance their skills within this area.
Questions that might be worth asking yourself (or your team) in order to assess your current level of skills as an interviewer are listed below. When answering these questions try rating yourself from 0-10 with 0 being the least satisfied and 10 being the most satisfied with your skill level in each area.
• Am I able to build a positive rapport with candidates and make them feel at ease?
• Am I up to date with employment law with a solid understanding of what type of questions are and are not deemed appropriate?
• How confident am I with competency and behavioural interviewing in order to establish if the candidate is both a behavioural fit for my team/ organisation and also a suitable fit for the specific role?
• Do I know how and when to probe and dig deeper into answers rather than accepting surface level answers from candidates?
• Am I aware of the importance of note taking at interviews and the implications under the Freedom of Information Acts?
• How good am I at actively listening to candidates and staying “in the moment” at interviews (as opposed to allowing my mind to wander off to other tasks that need to be completed that day)?
• How comfortable am I at interviewing graduates and entry level candidates who have minimal work experience on their CV?
• Do I know how to evaluate and rate candidates objectively to ensure a fair and consistent interview process?
I have had the opportunity to partner with and deliver interviewer skills training workshops to a number of organisations over recent months. What has really stood out is the enthusiasm shown by both experienced hiring managers and those new to the process of interviewing in their desire to step in to re-fresh on existing skills and develop new awareness in other areas.
