We are delighted to present the 19 GMACs that are members of the WUKF Ireland team travelling to the WUKF European Championship in Poland in 6 weeks!🇵🇱 They have been training exceptionally hard and will continue to do so until they hit the tatami🥋 This is the second time around for most of the team to represent their country🇮🇪 Sensei’ Gordon, Sorcha and Dervla will be travelling as very proud coaches.

I Quit Karate In The Summer Holidays

“I don’t want to do Karate anymore”

A phrase that many parents hear, especially during the summer holidays.

The lure of being on a break from a normal routine for 6 weeks or more, no school, fewer responsibilities, spending more time outside with friends and family, travelling and going on holiday giving that sense of extra freedom to be able do more, these are all common contributors to the draw of leaving their regular activities and maybe even replacing them with something new or different. It’s not exclusive to karate, it happens with many other clubs and activities.

How many times have you heard a child say that they don’t want to go back to school after the summer?

As a parent would you let them?

Of course not! You know why they don’t want to go back, and in most cases it’s the same with karate and other activities too.

As adults we also go through this, albeit changing from school to going back to work instead, but we do it anyway because we understand these feelings more than we did as a child and can discipline ourselves to continue.

My recommendation for any parent whose child is going through this is to encourage them to stick with it and let them know that these feelings are normal. Be compassionate and understanding as for them it probably feels much stronger than you may think.
In most cases it’s due to the “Summer Holiday Highs” and may kick in a bit harder in the first few weeks after the summer, in what we would call the “Post Holiday Blues”. Getting that feeling of missing all the extra time and freedom that we had. The students who get through it often come out with greater discipline, tenacity and stronger motivation.

However, it may be that they genuinely want to stop and/or move onto something else which isn’t due to the summer holiday feelings. As a parent you have to look seriously at your child and their needs and make that decision yourself.

If you’re not sure, please reach out to your sensei to speak to them about your concerns and hopefully they can help alleviate any worries.

We are beyond proud of our GMAC team who competed today at the WUKF Ireland National Championships! A special mention to the GMACs who competed for their first time today, as well as our Novice family katas. We are so happy to see our students hard work pay off👊🏻The support, teamwork and friendship among are students is something we’re especially proud of🧡
