There are many ways to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, and some may resonate with you more than others. Here are some examples:

•Breathing Based like diaphragmatic breathing, extended exhalations…
•Movement & body based methods like gentle stretching, concentration based movements, restorative yoga…
•Mind-Body Practices like meditation, Guided imagery, Body scanning…
•Sensory & Environmental Methods like soothing music, aromatherapy, warm baths or showers, Nature exposure…
•Social & Emotional methods like safe social connection, laughter, humming and singing…
•Physiological Technics like Vagal nerve stimulation through cold exposure; quick splash that will trigger the dive reflex that will slow the heart rate.

Adapting yoga poses with props makes the practice more accessible, more enjoyable, and far more interesting because it transforms yoga from something people try to fit into… into something that meets them where they are.

Vinyasa means “to place in a special way”. This translation comes from the Sanskrit roots:
•Vi = “in a special way”
•nyasa = “to place, arrange, or set down”
In yoga, this becomes the idea of placing movement with intention - each pose arranged thoughtfully and linked with breath.

In my classes I love combining the peace and strength that brings holding a pose with the fluidity of expressive movements. 

Together they create a balance practice that supports the following key essences:

•Stability and mobility 
•Strength and softness 
•Focus and expression

In Chair Yoga, accessibility means lovingly adapting each pose so it feels natural, supportive and truly within reach for every student. This is a combination of movements that will target the anterior chain of the body.

Chair Yoga may limit the exercises that target the stretches for the front of the body and any pose that will help with the stretch of the anterior chain must be taken with caution.

⚠️ Can the knee hold any weight? Can the toes curl under to support the leg in launch position? If not, try holding the weight of the body fully seated or try instead an standing high launch or warrior I variation for the stretch of the hip flexors. See my previous post.

Standing sequence in Chair Yoga.
Exploring various poses for the mobility and stability/strength of the ankles, knees, hips, thoracic and shoulder area. Combining Warrior I, II, side angle and triangle poses with added thoracic mobility drill with revolved triangle pose. The perfect combination for a rounded standing chair yoga sequence. Simple and effective.

I thank my husband, friends and family for making possible a very successful come back to my passion and true purpose in life beside being my husbands wife and my children’s mum.

I am grateful to my teachers for keeping me inspired and grateful to all the people that so far has come to my classes. I thank you for staying, I thank you for challenging me, for being present, for your enthusiasm and compassion. Thank you for trying and thank you for returning. … I am honoured.

Summer break approaches and in Tullow we will be finished at the end of May and we will return in September. Carlow classes will continue until end of June.

Shoulder stretch variation.

An accessible variation to Cow Face Pose or GomuKhasana. Just working with one arm at a time adding gentle movements of the head, twists and forward fold.
The technical term of this pose would be Passive Shoulder internal Rotation or Hand-Behind-Back -Stretch.
