Cats and bikes! Between the shop cat (Stickie!), the stray cats we feed and the fact that we carry our cats on bikes, it seemed logical to reflect the combination in bright, bold colours and bring a bit of joy to the Phibsborough road. Beautifully executed by - thanks again guys!

Bike shop, sells and fixes bikes, also a space for bicycle enthusiasts!
Trying the bikes you sell in real life conditions is important. So I borrowed my friend’s kids to see how the front loader handled a tall 10 years old. Well, it turns out, really well. No wobble, smooth acceleration, powerful brakes, and a happy kid with loads of giggles. Bikes bring joy.
Not an easy task…

Only 3% of people cycle daily in Ireland. But here's what really stands out. Only 1% of women cycle daily compared to men. That is a 4x gender gap.
But why is this a problem? It is not just about bikes, it is about equality.
Mobility inequality - women have less freedom to move independently
Health disparities - missing out on proven physical and mental health benefits
Economic impact - 80% of Dublin commuters say they cycle to save money.
Safety reflects infrastructure - 65% of women cite safety concerns. It is a signal that our streets are not built for everyone.
When 90% of women rarely or never cycle, it tells us that our cities are not designed with half the population in mind.
What prevents you from cycling even if you want to?

For those who missed that article last week. How a cargo bike can save you a fortune in motoring costs.
Good points made here: "... with almost half of all trips taken nationally under 5km, is it time to question how we use our cars, and whether the cost of running a second one is really worth it?"
And the main point of the article, which is focusing on costs:
"That you will save on fuel costs by switching a journey from a car to an e-bike is obvious, but one UK expert has put a figure on it. It was 140 times more expensive to drive a petrol or diesel car per mile in the UK this month [April] than it was to power an average e-bike"
Link below and we're also putting a link in our bio to a Reddit conversation about this - loads of first hand experiences from people, including people living outside cities, who gives tips and feedback to other people.

Watching the chaos go by from the calm of the shop. Taking a deep breath before starting the day. Happy International Workers’ Day folks!

At Rothar, we are proud to operate as an Apartheid-Free Zone.
While our core inventory - bikes and components from brands like Tern, Lovens, and Muli - is naturally free of Israeli ties, it is very difficult to know where what you sell comes from.
It is also quite hard to keep up: we are moving away from Big tech in our day to day operations for example, but we are still using Meta for our promotion.
As a small independent shop though, the toughest is the insurance: major providers like AXA and Allianz have faced scrutiny for their investments, yet finding accessible, ethical coverage in Ireland remains incredibly difficult for smaller businesses.
We are doing our best to navigate these complicated global supply chains and financial systems, making conscious choices where we can, while remembering that perfection is a journey, not a destination.
We invite our community to join us in this ongoing effort to build a more just and transparent local economy.
