FANORE BURREN RUN 2026
Saturday 26 September — twelve days to go
Half Marathon | 10K | 5K

That is the road above the village, on the kind of September morning we are hoping for.

Nobody out there on their own. That is the thing worth knowing if you have been wondering whether you are fit enough, or fast enough, or the right sort of person for a race. There is no right sort. There are people who run it, people who jog it and people who walk it, and they all get the same welcome at the finish.

Pick your distance
5K — the gentle one, and a good share of the field walks it.
10K — the quiet roads around the village, the ones in the photograph.
Half Marathon — the climb up Slieve Elva, and the view from the top to make up for it.

Everyone who crosses the line gets the medal, with Kevin and Ivan on the front.

You don't have to be a runner.

Every year a good share of the field walks it, and nobody is left behind in Fanore. There are people out on the course chatting the whole way round, and the same welcome at the finish whether the 5K takes you twenty minutes or an hour.

Bring the family
The 5K is €20, or €15 for over-65s and students, and there's a family rate — message the page or email [email protected] and we'll sort it out. Children are very welcome with an adult. Dogs are welcome on the run too, on a lead.

Pick your distance
5K — the shortest of the three and the easiest day out.
10K — a bit more in it, out on the quiet roads around the village.
Half Marathon — the climb up Slieve Elva, and the view from the top to make up for it.

Everyone who crosses the line gets the same medal, with Kevin and Ivan on the front.

Friday's post about Kevin and Ivan has now been seen by close to five thousand people — more than anything this page has posted before. Thank you to everyone who shared it. If it made you think about lining out on the 26th, here is how to make sure of your place.

Not sure which distance. The 5k is a nice gentle route to Fanore Beach and back, The 10k and Half Marathon are more challenging with some hills on the green roads - All three will give you some great views. Every route is marked, every finish is clearly signed, and the medal is the same whichever you choose — Kevin and Ivan on the front.

This year we run in memory of Kevin McCormack and Ivan Linnane.

Without Kevin, this run would simply not be happening. He founded it and managed it in his own laid-back way, and somehow it always came together. Nobody ever asked where the safety cones came from, and nobody ever will. The night before the race he'd be out placing them by torchlight, and just after dawn on race morning he'd be up again, making sure all was in order. That was Kevin.

Ivan was known and loved by everyone. He was the glue that held Fanore together, and he did it without ever really knowing. He was fierce too — Ivan traffic-managed everything that happened in this village, and struck fear into the hearts of many a bus driver. We miss him greatly.

Every participant this year — half marathon, 10K or 5K, running, jogging or walking — takes home the commemorative medal with the two of them on it, made in their memory. Not a prize for the fastest. One for everyone who lines out on the 26th with them in mind.

This year we run for Kevin McCormack and Ivan Linnane.

Kevin founded the Fanore Run. Ivan served on the committee for many years and was a great friend of the event. Between them they turned a race into a tradition, and everyone who lines out on the 26th will be part of it.

The medal
Every participant receives a commemorative medal featuring Kevin and Ivan, made in their memory. If you have ever thought about doing Fanore, this is the year to do it.

The course
Same routes as last year. All three distances stay on quiet L roads and green roads, well away from traffic, with the Burren limestone on one side and the Atlantic on the other. The half marathon takes on the climb up Slieve Elva — a serious test, and the views at the top are your reward. Every route is marked and every finish clearly signed. Dogs are welcome on the run, on a lead.

This year, we run in memory of two great friends and dedicated supporters of the Fanore Run – 💙 Kevin McCormack and 💙 Ivan Linnane.

Kevin founded the event, while Ivan served for many years on the committee. Together, they helped create something far greater than a race – a community, a tradition and a day filled with friendship, laughter and plenty of craic.

☘️☘️☘️Tribute to Kevin McCormack☘️☘️☘️

This year, as we get ready for our Fanore St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday 15th March 2026, we’ll be taking a moment to remember Kevin McCormack, a true Fanore man who passed away in 2025.
Kevin was one of the driving forces behind getting this parade going over 20 years ago — and every single year he showed up with a float, full of mischief, colour and community spirit. Many of us still laugh at the stories of Kevin heading off “just for one little prop”… and coming back after travelling far and wide around Ireland with something brilliant strapped into the van! - That was Kevin !!!!
So this year, in Kevin’s memory, we’re asking our community, friends, families, clubs, and visitors to enter a float into the parade - we need as many as possible to keep the parade going — and there’s no better way to honour Kevin than to fill the road with the same creativity and effort he brought every year. ☘️☘️☘️

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our dear friend and former committee member, Willem Verhulst
Willem was a unique and remarkable individual whose life journey began in Holland in 1946, in a country still healing from the scars of war. He survived the devastating floods of 1953 as a child, taking refuge on the roof of his family home with his loved ones — an early experience that shaped his quiet resilience and perspective on life.
Willem made Fanore his home 23 years ago, having first visited as a guest in Anna Towler's B&B. He quickly became part of the fabric of the village, especially through his love of Irish music and song. For many years, he was the heart behind the Fanore Song Nights in O'Donohue’s Pub — organising, supporting, and sharing in the music that brought people together. He also partnered with Patsy Carrucan to write songs that reflected the local stories and spirit of the place he grew to love.
As a long-serving member of the Fanore Events Club, Willem brought a quiet diligence and integrity to everything he did. He never left a detail to chance and brought a gentle humour to our Irish habit of arriving "just a few minutes late" to meetings — a cultural quirk he never quite got used to!
Outside of community life, Willem was a gifted translator and writer. He translated books between English and Dutch — and even Irish — and wrote thoughtful book reviews for various publications. Most recently, he worked closely with local historian Joe Queally, editing Joe's latest work, Tragedies of Clare.
Willem stepped back from the club three years ago due to health reasons, but his presence and quiet influence have always remained with us. His passing is a great loss to all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Ans van de Giessen and his daughter Suzanne Verhulst and her partner.
We extend our deepest sympathies to them at this difficult time.
Rest in peace, Willem — your words, your music, and your kindness will not be forgotten.
A funeral service will be held at St. Patrick's Church, Fanore on Saturday 24th of January 2026 at 12 o'clock. Followed by private Cremation

Garda Thomas Dowling will be remembered tomorrow (Sunday December 28th) with a commemoration at Craggagh Graveyard beginning at 2:00pm.

CENTENARY commemorations take place this Sunday in Fanore, 100 years on from the first killing of on-duty Garda in Co Clare.
