Bassai Dai Karate Ireland - JKA Galway Traditional Shotokan Karate - JKA

We're delighted to announce details of our Open Autumn Course on September 12th, in Portlaoise, Co. Laois.

This years instructors are Liam Murphy Sensei (6th Dan JKA) from our YMCA Karate Club and Leandro Caria (5th Dan JKA) from Bassai Dai Karate Ireland - JKA Galway.

This is an open course with classes for all grades. Fees are €10 for JKA-Shotokan Ireland members (please register via Spond) and €15 for guests.

CHAKUGAN (着眼) — THE EYES IN KUMITE

In Kumite, Chakugan is more than simply looking at the opponent. It is the strategic use of vision to perceive movement, distance, timing, intention, and opportunity.

The eyes should not become excessively fixed on a single point, such as the opponent’s hands or feet. Instead, the practitioner develops a broad and composed field of vision, allowing the whole opponent to be perceived.

Through proper Chakugan, we can detect subtle changes in:

• Maai — distance and positioning
• Hyoshi — rhythm and timing
• Posture and weight distribution
• Initiation of movement
• Openings and changes in intention

At a higher level, Kumite is not only about reacting to a technique after it begins. The goal is to perceive the signs that precede the attack and act at the appropriate moment.

This is closely connected to Sen, Sen no Sen, and Go no Sen…different ways of understanding and controlling initiative.

The body responds to what the mind perceives, and the eyes are one of the most important channels through which that information arrives.

Do not simply watch the attack.
Learn to see the intention before the attack develops.
