🦅 Emerald Eagles 🆚 Rattoo Rovers
🏆 Celsius Cup Final
📅 Thursday, May 28th

Where do I even start with this one sports fans!

Once again, the Eagles pulled off an unbelievable victory against Division 1 champions Rattoo Rovers in the Celsius Cup Final. With Rattoo being favourites to win the competition as the highest-seeded team, the Eagles knew this would be a game where they would need to rise to the challenge.

The first half went to Rattoo Rovers. Early free kicks and corners had the Eagles pinned back in their own half. Then, from a corner, the Eagles found themselves behind. Throughout the remainder of the half, the Eagles slowly grew into the game after a sluggish start. As always, they looked dangerous going forward, while Rattoo searched for a second goal. In all honesty, there were no real clear-cut chances or big saves for the rest of the half. There were a couple of half chances for Matt Fleming and Krystian Wielgus, but the half ended 1-0 to Rattoo.

The second half saw the Eagles continue to grow into the game even more. However, as they pushed forward, Rattoo still looked dangerous on the break. Some excellent last-man defending from Mike Murphy, along with some superb saves from Cian Buckley, kept the deficit at just one goal.

Again, there were more half chances for the Eagles, but nothing that really tested the keeper. However, as you have become accustomed to by now, you just cannot write this Eagles team off!

With momentum swinging and pressure building, the boys found a way through pure fight, desire, and a never-give-up attitude. The ball was won back deep in the Rattoo half. Marci Baumann initial shot was blocked, and the ball looped into the air. Krystian reacted quickest, got underneath it, and unleashed a magnificent volley that flew past everyone and smashed into the net. With the clock showing the 88th minute, it led to absolute chaos from the Eagles supporters and players alike. 1-1. Extra time!

Extra time saw the Eagles come alive once again, and there was certainly no sign of fatigue from the boys, even after playing six games in three weeks. Rattoo continued to pose a threat, but the Eagles had momentum!

There were chances again for Krystian, as well as Adam Joy and Josh Williams, but no luck. The pick of those chances, however, fell to captain Jake Shirtliff, who collected a clearance 35 yards from goal and absolutely smashed it! The Eagles were ready to celebrate, waiting for the ball to hit the opposite side netting, but instead it crashed off the post and flew across the face of goal.

Penalties to decide it. Strap in…

Full time couldn’t separate them. Extra time couldn’t separate them. Eventually, after 22 penalties in total and all the emotions that came with them, the Eagles claimed the victory and the trophy!

Cian Buckley not only saved four penalties, but then stepped up to score the winner himself for his first career goal, in front of his family and boys, all on his birthday! It was written in the stars you might say.

Of course, well done to all the other penalty takers who converted their spot kicks, and to every Eagle who played their part in Thursday’s absolute thriller! 👏.

Condolences from the Eagles family upon hearing the sad news of Ewan. Thinking of his family at this time.
