U16s Crowned Desmond Cup Champions in Killeaney πβ€οΈπ
Our U16 squad travelled to Killeaney yesterday morning in search of silverware as they faced familiar opposition in Ballingarry.
They made the dream start when Anna OβKeeffe turned her defender brilliantly and squeezed her effort into the net β 1β0 GMU.
The game ebbed and flowed with few clear chances, though Γine McBride came inches from doubling the lead after rounding the keeper, only to see her shot roll narrowly wide.
Half-Time: GMU 1β0 Ballingarry
The second half began just as lively. Maura was outstanding between the posts, while centreβback duo Clara and Orlaith dealt superbly with the Ballingarry attack. Fullβbacks Kayla and Katie were electric up and down the wings, supported brilliantly by wingers Emily and Maggie.
Rachel and Emma entered the fray up front and on the wing, adding fresh energy, strong challenges and excellent defensive work.
Midway through the half, a GMU attack saw the ball break kindly for Sarah Barrett, whose strike was well saved by the Ballingarry keeper.
As the game entered its final moments, Γine and Moya McBride were everywhere β breaking up play, winning tackles and driving the team forward. Up top, Anna and Sarah worked tirelessly, leading the line while also dropping deep to help defensively as Ballingarry pushed hard for an equaliser.
Eventually, referee Andy Meehan blew the final whistle to huge celebrations from the GMU supporters. A brilliant contest between two evenly matched sides, played under glorious sunshine in Killeaney.
After the game, the match officials presented Kayla Sheehy with a richly deserved Player of the Match award ππ
Joint captains Clara Roche and Anna OβKeeffe spoke superbly, thanking the officials, coaches, parents and of course Ballingarry for a great sporting game.
The girls now turn their attention to NCW on Tuesday in the League Shield Final.
Well done girls β an outstanding achievement in your maiden season! ππ
