Golden/Kilfeacle caused something of a shock in Canon Hayes Park, Bansha on Friday evening when coming from ten points down to defeat favourites Cashel King Cormacs in the semi-final of the Maria Marron Palmers Hill Stud West Junior A Football Championship. Tyler Barry played a key part in this making a number of key saves in the first half while pointing four two pointers from placed balls in the second half as Golden/Kilfeacle who had played second fiddle for most of the game advanced while Cashel were left ruing not putting this game to bed earlier.

Cashel King Cormacs playing into the village dominated the possession for most of the half and probably should have been much further ahead at the break but for Tyler Barry in the Golden/Kilfeacle goal and some wayward shooting. The first score arrived in the sixth minute when Ronan Connolly got in for the game’s opening goal. Golden/Kilfeacle struggled to breakdown the Cashel defence but Ronan Hayes did get them off the mark with a point in the tenth minute. Cashel though continued to be dominant with Eoghan Connolly leading from centre back along with Conn and Ross Bonnar and Colm Ryan. Towards the end of the first quarter Ronan Connolly had his second goal after a kickout was intercepted to put them 2-1 to 0-1 ahead. Colm Ryan and Eoghan Connolly both pointed to stretch that lead further early in the second quarter. Indeed, Cashel could have been out of sight but for Tyler Barry who pulled off a great save while also stopping two palmed efforts for goal. Lee Hayes gave Golden/Kilfeacle some respite as his side came more into the game as the half progressed getting a number of shots off. However, with two points but Dylan O’Grady pointed a free late in the half to see Cashel King Cormacs ahead, 2-4 to 0-3 at half time.

By the seventh minute of the second half Cashel King Cormacs looked as if they would comfortably advance when Dylan O’Grady pointed from play and a placed ball with Colm Ryan adding his second to see them 2-7 to 0-3 ahead. Cashel would fail to score again though they definitely did have the chances while at times also took the wrong option. The final wide tally twelve to six in favour of Cashel. Harry Fogarty and Lee Hayes got the Golden/Kilfeacle scoreboard moving again and just before the three-quarter mark Tyler Barry was brought up from the goal to kick his first two pointer. The difference was now six points but Cashel still looked strong. Twice in the last ten minutes of normal time Tyler Barry again came up to point two more two pointers. The Golden/Kilfeacle followers were now in full voice and when Lee Hayes pointed a close range free, they were back within the minimum. Cashel now try to hold possession as the clock went into the red however in a final attack Golden/Kilfeacle were awarded another free. Again, Barry came up the field and with the last scoring chance of the game duly obliged to send his side into a West Final against Cappawhite.
