Expedition Paddler Jeff Allen has put this Taran 16 through the toughest of tests over the last two years. I've witnessed myself it landing on rocks and been bashed around during rescue training. The carbon kevlar premier lay up is bullet proof. Get in touch if you'd like to join the happy Rockpool Kayaks paddlers around the world

A massive shout out to Mike Webb at Rockpool Kayaks. Mike built this Taran16 for me in a premier lay up (vacuum infused epoxy) it’s probably the lightest kayak I’ve paddled and I’ve used it for almost every course I’ve run in the last two years. As I left the factory he said ‘don’t be kind to it Jeff I need to see how strong it is’. I’m not sure how many rocks I’ve side surfed onto, I’ve done numerous difficult landings, even rolling it countless times over barnacle encrusted rock, although I have managed to scrape gel coat I have never managed to hole the hull layup. It is now my no 1 choice for Incident management and expedition use. The design speaks for itself, it is probably the best sea kayak design there is imho.

The Rockpool Taran 16 vs Taran 18

Well, as Escape Outdoor reached the line a little earlier with their video on the T16 vs T18, the timing seems a little unfortunate. C'est la vie.

But we might as well push on, so here is my take on the T16 vs T18 discussion:

"The debate whether to choose the Rockpool Taran 16 or the Taran 18 rages at the moment.

A decade ago I designed the Taran 18 and then the Taran 16, and of course I’ve been paddling Tarans ever since.

This piece is not aimed to be a ‘which-Taran-should-I-buy’ guide. That decision is down to you as a paddler, based on your experience, ability and aims.

What I try to do here is to compare some handling characteristics that I’ve come to know over a decade of Taran fun. Some of it is quantifiable, but much is almost completely subjective.

It’s down to you to decide if it is useful."
